DAYTON, Ohio - After dropping the first set, the University of Dayton volleyball team roared back to claim the 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-9) win over the visiting Fordham Rams Friday night at UD's Frericks Center. With the win, the Flyers improve to 9-10 on the season and 3-4 in Atlantic 10 play while the Rams fall to 8-14 overall and 1-5 in league action. Senior
Megan Campbell led the Flyers with 12 kills and narrowly missed the double-double with nine blocks.
Also for the Flyers, senior Shayne Brown added 11 kills and six digs while sophomore Jenna Jendryk set a match-high 35 assists to go with six blocks and four digs. Sophomore Janna Krafka passed a team-high 12 digs on the night and junior Isolde Hannan tallied seven blocks and six kills.
UD out-hit FOR .277 to .036 and the Flyers recorded 42 kills to the Rams' 39. Dayton tallied 16 team blocks to Fordham's three.
Dayton opened the match with a 6-3 advantage but Fordham battled back to take the 10-6 advantage after rattling off seven-straight points. Hannan stopped the run with a fierce down-ball and followed that up with an assisted block with sophomore Angel Agu. A 4-1 Flyer run evened the set at 12-12 and a Ram attack error gave UD back the lead at 14-13.
Up 17-16, UD gave up eight-straight points to face set-point at 24-17. Hannan stopped the run again for the Flyers with a kill but Fordham claimed the 25-18 first-frame win.
Brown's kill early in the second game evened the score at seven apiece, the seventh tie of the set, and kick-started a 6-0 Flyer run to give UD the 12-7 lead. The advantage was nine, 18-9, following a double-block from Campbell and Jendryk and it was nine again, 23-14, when Fordham called for timeout. The Rams saved set-point once but the Flyers took the 25-15 victory in the second set to even the match at one set each.
Trailing early in the third game, Dayton scored six consecutive points to jump out, 7-2, on Fordham. The lead was stretched to eight, 12-4, after a 5-0 Flyer run and UD led by as many as 10. The Rams used a 4-1 run to cut into the advantage but seven, 17-10, would be as close as they would get. Sophomore Jill Loiars sealed the third-set win, 25-15, for UD with a kill.
The Flyers started the fourth set off strong, opening up the 11-1 lead after rattling off 11 straight points. After leading by as many as 16, 22-6, Dayton cruised to the 25-9 win in the fourth set to take the match, 3-1.
Fordham was led by Lisa Hipp with a match-high 15 kills and Maria Rodenberg with a match-high 15 digs.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 with a 1 p.m. match-up against Rhode Island at Frericks Center. Be sure to wear PINK Sunday for UD's "Think Pink" match to support breast cancer awareness.
