DAYTON FALLS TO LA SALLE ON PK’S IN FIRST ROUND

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's soccer team took on La Salle Thursday night in Atlantic 10 opening round action and fell to the visitors 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

The last time the two teams met was in a double overtime Dayton victory on Nov. 3 in Philadelphia, Pa. with the Flyers taking a 3-2 win from the Explorers.

Thursday's contest started off slow with both teams trying to get a feel for the tempo of the game.

La Salle took the early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when a clearance by sophomore goalkeeper Chris Froschauer took a bad hop and fell to the feet of Explorer striker Jason Plumhoff, who tapped it into the back of the net for an easy goal.

Dayton managed to even the score at 1-1 in the 33rd minute when junior Greg Enstone drilled home a deflected shot by junior Amass Amankona, scoring his 10th of the season. Amankona picked up the assist.

At the half, the Flyers and Explorers were knotted up at 1-1. Shots were hard to come by with Dayton having twos shot on goal and La Salle having one. The style of play was aggressive with 12 fouls in the first 45 minutes.

As the second half got underway, Dayton had a number of opportunities to score with a bevy of shots on the La Salle goal. The Flyers pushed the pace of the game and kept the ball in the Explorer third of the field in the early stages of the second half. In the first 15 minutes, Dayton out-shot La Salle 7-0.

The Flyers kept the momentum in their favor heading into the late stages of the game, but were unable to capitalize. Play continued to be aggressive as fouls and even yellow cards started to increase.

After the second 45 minutes, the score remained deadlocked at 1-1. The Flyers and Explorers were going to overtime at Baujan.
Neither first nor second overtime saw a goal as the teams settled in for the penalty shootout.

Dayton shot first in the PK shootout and hit two of their four attempts. La Salle managed to convert three attempts though and ended the Flyers' season in the first round of the A10 tournament.

In the end, Dayton dominated the tempo and pace of the game racking up 31 shots, 13 of which were on goal. Enstone had the lone goal for the Flyers while Froschauer had four saves.

The Flyers (14-2-3, 4-2-2 A10) end their 2013 campaign in heartbreaking fashion, but still claims one of the best winning percentages in school history.
