LAHAINA, Hawai'i – The EA Sports Maui Invitational is built on celebrating upsets. The Dayton Flyers made sure that historic tradition continued.
Jordan SIbert led Dayton with 23 points as UD remained unbeaten with a comeback 84-79 upset of the No. 10/11 Gonzaga Bulldogs..The Flyers are now 5-0, while Gonzaga is 4-1.
Dyshawn Pierre added 15 points and nine rebounds,
Devin Oliver scored 12 and
Khari Price tallied 11 points as UD improved to 5-0 overall.
The Flyers trailed by as much as 16 in the first half, but a great second-half effort put them up by nine, 72-63 with 3:46 to left in the game. Gonzaga battled back to cut the lead to one twice in the final 28 seconds, but Pierre sank four straight free throws to keep UD ahead.
Kyle Dranginis missed an open 3-pointer that could have tied it for the Bulldogs with four seconds to go, and Price grabbed the rebound, was fouled and sank a pair to clinch
Archie Miller's first win over a ranked team.
Sibert had 16 points in the second half as the Flyers (5-0) came back to give the early-season tournament its first major upset.
Dayton took its first lead during a 7-0 run with less than 12 minutes to play after cutting into Gonzaga's lead as soon as the second half began.
The Flyers were lights out from beyond the arc in the second half, going 8-of-13 and controlled the glass, out-rebounding Gonzaga 42-32. UD had an 18-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
The EA Sports Maui Invitational has been kind to the Flyers. Dayton holds a 6-1 all-time record in Maui through three appearances.
Other key contributors for the Flyers included
Kendall Pollard, who shot 4-for-4 from the field to end up with a career-high nine points and
Devon Scott, who totaled six points and nine rebounds.
