2013 Hawkeye Challenge Site | Game Notes
DAYTON, Ohio – No. 14/16 University of Dayton women's basketball opens the 2013-14 season at the Hawkeye Challenge in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa Nov. 9-10.
Following an 84-58 victory over the University of Indianapolis in an exhibition game Nov. 1 at UD Arena in front of 1,056 fans on Military Appreciation Night, the nationally-ranked Flyers will now kick off the regular season.
Dayton plays UC Riverside Saturday, Nov. 9 in the second game of the Challenge at 2 p.m. ET.
UC Riverside earned a 91-56 exhibition win over California Baptist Nov. 2. Sophomore Brittany Crain led six players in double-digit scoring with 16 points, as the team shot 48.5 percent from the field. Crain was named to the 2013-14 Big West Preseason All-Conference Team. The Highlanders play Iowa Friday, Nov. 8 to open their season. UC Riverside is coming off a 2012-13 season in which they went 11-18.
Sunday, Nov. 10 the Flyers will face the host Hawkeyes at 2 p.m. ET in the final game of the challenge. Iowa, the only Big Ten team to appear in the last six NCAA Tournaments, went 21-13 last season and is coming off a 92-68 win over Concordia (Minn.) University in its exhibition game Nov. 3.Â
Iowa is led by junior Samantha Logic who was named Preseason All-Big Ten this year and is the team's second leading returning scorer with 9.4 ppg in 2012-13. Logic set the school record for single-season assists (217), and led the Big Ten and ranked 15th in the NCAA in assists per game (6.4). Melissa Dixon is Iowa's leading returning scorer, averaging 10.1 ppg in 2012-13.Â
This is the first meeting for the Flyers against both UC Riverside and Iowa.
Dayton's home opener is Friday, Nov. 15 vs. Akron at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.
