DAYTON – The University of Dayton Flyers led wire-to-wire Thursday night in a 96-84 win over Iona at UD Arena. Sophomore forward
Dyshawn Pierre had the most complete game of his career, with 22 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Senior captain
Vee Sanford added 17 points and four assists off the bench, and sophomore point guard
Khari Price had 16 points.
It was Pierre's second double-double of the year, and the 14 rebounds were a career high. He matched his season high in assists and did not commit a turnover. Sanford's 17 points came on 8-of-11 shooting and was his fifth straight game scoring double-digits off the bench. Price was four-for-five from three-point range.
Iona's A.J. English lead all scorers with a career-high 30 points.
Dayton led by as much as 15 in the first half (39-24 with 6:20 to go), but Iona got the margin under 10 to make the halftime score 51-42. UD pushed out again in the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Flyers' largest advantage was 23 (83-60 with 7:25 left in the game) and the Gaels scored the last nine points to make the final 96-84.
UD shot a season-best with a 55.4 field goal percentage. Dayton's bench outscored Iona's 38-10, along with UD winning the battle of points in the paint 52-34. The Flyers were able to out-rebound the Gaels 40-26.
Dayton is now 9-2, while Iona fell to 5-4 on the season.
The Flyers remain home to take on Southern Cal on Sunday, Dec. 22. Game time is 2:00 p.m. ET.
