DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In the longest game in University of Dayton football history, reserve cornerback
Tom Fanning's interception in the fifth overtime lifted the Dayton Flyers to a 54-48 win over the Davidson Wildcats Saturday at Davidson.
The win was UD coach
Rick Chamberlin's 50th in his seventh as the Flyer head coach.
Dayton running back
Connor Kacsor carried the ball for 47 times for 213 yards. All four of his career-high TD's came in overtime.
In the game's first 64 minutes, only two touchdowns were scored but then four TD's were scored over a wild final five-minutes and 24 seconds of regulation. The game was sent into overtime when Trevor Smith nailed a 44-yard field goal as time expired.Â
Kacsor scored on runs of 2, 4, 4 and 6 yards. He also had a two-point conversion in the third OT.Â
After the first two overtimes, teams are required to go for two after scoring a touchdown. The Flyers had to come through on two do-or-die plays to extend the game. In the third overtime, corner
Mitch Yinger intercepted a pass on the two-point try. And in the fourth OT, quarterback
Will Bardo dove across the goal line after a scramble to make it 48-48.
In the fifth overtime, Kacsor touched the ball five straight times on four runs and a pass reception, but the two-point pass was incomplete. Luckily for the Flyers, the failed PAT did not come into play when Fanning came up with his first career interception on Davidson's second play of the fifth overtime.
Bardo threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, the last going to
Gabe Macis on fourth-and-seven from the 12 with 56 seconds in regulation. Bardo was 26 of 42 passing with two interceptions.
Ross Smith caught eight passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Macis hauled in six for 91 and two scores.

Nate Sudnick and safety Zack Elias led Dayton with 11 tackles. Sudnick had six solo hits, three tackles in the backfield and two sacks. Flyer
Ryan Schwenke had 10 hits (8 solo), two passes broken up, two TFL and s sack.
Quarterback J.P. Douglas finished 38 of 58 for 313 yards for Davidson and had four TD passes for scores, two in the fourth quarter and two in OT. Three of the scores went to wideout William Morris, who had 15 catches for 158 yards.
Dayton ran 100 plays and gained 525 yards in the game. The Flyers were 11 for 20 in third-down conversions, and three of three on fourth down. Davidson was five for 19 on third down, but benefitted from eight first downs by penalty.
Dayton is now 3-1, and 1-0 in the Pioneer Football League. Davidson is now1-5, and 0-2.
