DAYTON, Ohio - The Dayton Flyers took care of business early in the Frericks Center on Friday night, as they downed the La Salle Explorers 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-15). The win completed a season sweep of the Explorers and guaranteed the Flyers the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship and the number one seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 tournament.
The Flyers (25-5, 12-1 A-10) jumped out on the Explorers (10-20, 3-10 A-10) early in the first set, rattling off the first four points of the match. La Salle pulled to within three points at 8-5 in the first, but a kill by
Isolde Hannan and back-to-back service aces by
Jane Emmenecker would quiet the Explorer run. The Flyers would push their lead to as many as 10 before taking the final two points and the first set 25-13.
The second set brought more of the same for the Flyers. Behind the serving of Emmenecker, Dayton jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. A pair of kills by Hannan and two from
Jill Loiars along with a service ace by Emmenecker forced La Salle to call their first time out of the second set. Dayton continued to pounce on La Salle, taking advantage of any opportunity the Explorers gave them. The Flyers hit .478 as a team for the second set, while holding the Explorers to a paltry .036. Through two sets, Dayton never trailed, as they took set two 25-11.
The Explorers made things interesting in the third set as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead behind a service ace and a Dayton attack error. However, a kill by
Jessica Sloan, a service ace by
Janna Krafka and two consecutive kills by
Alaina Turner turned the set in the Flyers favor. Dayton never relinquished the lead, as they continued to serve aggresively and put up a big block to stop the Explorers. The Flyers would go on to win the third set 25-15 to secure the 3-0 sweep.
Emmenecker once again led a very efficient offensive distribution as she dished out 27 assists to go along with three service aces, four digs, and a block assist. Krafka passed a match-high 10 digs for Dayton. Turner led all hitters with 12 kills while hitting at a .455 clip. Hannan added 8 kills to go along with her match-high six block assists.
The Flyers continue their homestand with their final regular season Atlantic 10 contest on Sunday against the Duquesne Dukes. Dayton will be celebrating Senior Day, in honor of the squad's two seniors Hannan and
Rachel Jones. First serve at the Frericks Center is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
