KINGSTON, R.I. – No. 25 University of Dayton women's basketball team  (16-5, 9-1 A-10) defeated Rhode Island (7-18, 2-10 A-10) 73-66 at the Ryan Center Wednesday night in Atlantic 10 action.
 
The Flyers struggled from the field, shooting a season-low 32.1 percent from the floor and season-low 13.3 percent from three-point range. UD made up for it at the free throw line, making 35-of-44 attempts.  It broke URI's Ryan Center record for free throws made (previous record was 29) and UD's women's basketball program record (previous high was 33 set in 1984).
 
Four Flyers scored in double figures led by junior Andrea Hoover's game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Hoover shot 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Sophomore Amber Deane added 15 points in her first start since her concussion. She shot 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Senior Cassie Sant had 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high four steals. Freshman Celeste Edwards put up 10 points. Junior Ally Malott had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Malott shot 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
 
Dayton led 34-28 at the half. The Flyers are 13-1 this season when leading at the half.
 
The Flyers return to UD Arena to take on Richmond on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as it is Dayton's Breast Cancer Awareness/Play4Kay Game and the Flyers will recognize breast cancer survivors and their families.
