KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Dayton volleyball team remains unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play with its 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-6) win at Rhode Island Friday night. With the win, the Flyers improve to 19-5 on the season and 10-0 in league action while Rhode Island falls to 16-7 overall and 4-2 in A-10 play. Dayton's winning streak also extends to 17 matches.
STATS OF THE MATCH• Sophomore
Jessica Sloan recorded a career-high 15 kills to lead five Flyers in double-digit terminations. Right behind her was sophomore
Amber Erhahon added 14 kills while hitting at .522 and tallying six blocks.
• Seniors
Angel Agu and
Jill Loiars each had 11 kills and Loiars was the team's leading blocker with eight.
• Senior
Janna Krafka passed a match-high 16 digs and sophomore
Margo Wolf got under 14 digs.
• Rhode Island was led by Audrey Castro with 16 kills and 15 digs for one of two double-doubles for the Rams. Cate Seman passed 16 digs Marie Gillcrist tallied five blocks.
• Dayton out-hit Rhode Island, .299 to .164, and the Flyers recorded 67 kills to the Rams' 53.
SET-BY-SET• Set One: Dayton and Rhode Island traded points for most of the first half of the first frame and the two teams were tied at 13. The Flyers put together a 4-0 run to pull ahead, 17-13, but the Rams were able to pull to within one, 19-18. Dayton reached set point at 24-22 but Rhode Island was able to hold once. An Agu-Loiars block sealed the deal as the Flyers won the first one, 25-23.
• Set Two: Rhode Island controlled the first part of the second set, leading by five, 9-4, after a Dayton attacking error. Agu and Turner stuffed a ball at the net to even the score at 13 points apiece and the set was tied again at 18-18. The Rams got in front by three, 21-18, and held on for the 25-22 second-set win to even the match.
• Set Three: The third set was tied six times before Dayton reached 10 on a Flyer double block. Neither team could get ahead more than two until URI picked up three straight points for the 22-18 advantage. A UD service error gave URI set point at 22 but the Flyers held with a kill from Turner. Ultimately, the Rams took a 25-23 win in the third game for a 2-1 match lead.
• Set Four: Set four was tied at five-all when Dayton rattled off five straight to take a 10-5 lead on a kill from Loiars. The Flyers were up five at 14-9 but the Rams rallied to take a one-point advantage at 15-14. A 4-0 spurt late in the set from UD set the score at 23-19 in favor of the Flyers and Dayton stayed alive with the 25-21 win in the fourth frame.
• Set Five: Dayton and Rhode Island were close through the first half of the deciding set but the Flyers were able to go up three, 7-4, on another double block. UD scored the last six points of the set to take the 15-6 win in set five and the 3-2 match victory.
UP NEXT• Dayton will scoot over to the Bronx for a 7 p.m. match-up at Fordham Saturday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Rams' Rose Hill Gym.
