DAYTON -- The University of Dayton Flyers won their 19th straight home game and reached the 20-win plateau for the seventh time in the last eight seasons Thursday in Dayton, edging the upset-minded Saint Joseph's Hawks 68-64.
Sophomore
Kendall Pollard led the Flyers with 22 points on seven-of-eight shooting on the day.
Dayton moves to 20-5 on the season, and are in a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic-10 with a 10-3 conference record.
Junior
Dyshawn Pierre finished with his fifth double-double of the year, scoring 15 points and adding 10 rebounds.
Pierre became the 44th Flyer (and first Canadian) to reach the 1,000 career point milestone. He finished the day with 1,007 career points, good for 43rd on the all-time list.
The other Flyers in double digits were sophomore
Kyle Davis and junior
Jordan Sibert with 11 points each.
Both teams started the game blistering from three, with SJU hitting four of its first five and Dayton hitting four of the first eight. At the end of the first half Saint Joseph's shot 58 percent from three while Dayton hit 54 percent. Coming into the game, Saint Joseph's was 338th in the country in three-point percentage.
The first half ended with SJUs Shavar Newkirk hitting a long buzzer beater to tie the game at 36.
Dayton grabbed the momentum in the second half, leading by as many as nine, but SJU would not go away. The Hawks took advantage of a three-minute UD scoring drought and used a 12-0 run to take the lead at the 11-minute mark.
It would stay a one-possession game for most of the second half, and was a two-point game during the final SJU possession. On that possession, tough defense from Sibert forced a Saint Joseph's turnover. Pierre would then sink the final two free throws to seal the game.
Saint Joseph's was led by Isaiah Miles and DeAndre Bembry, who both scored 23 points each. SJU falls to 11-14 on the season and 5-8 in the A10.
Bembry put his team on his back, scoring 16 points in the second half. Dayton countered by committing just two second-half turnovers and making 13 second-half free throws.
UD has a quick turnaround, heading back on the road this Saturday with a trip to Pittsburgh to face the Duquesne Dukes. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBCSN.
