FLYERS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER FROM EASTERN KENTUCKY

Dayton wins first two games of home season

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team swept their first home doubleheader of the 2015 season with 2-1, and 10-9 victories over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Wednesday afternoon. The Flyers have now won 10 of their last 11 games this season, and improve their record to 15-9 on the season.

Game One: Dayton 2, Eastern Kentucky 1
Dayton took game one in what ended up being a pitchers battle.  Both teams only managed three hits, but the difference in the game was a Natalie Mariano home run in the third inning.  Her third home run of the season tied the game at one apiece.  The next inning Dayton would take the lead on a Jordan Jennings sacrifice fly.

On the mound, Kayla English got the start, going three strong and striking out a pair.  Manda Cash would get the win in relief with two and a third innings of only giving up one hit and striking out five.  It is her fifth win of the season.  Gabrielle Snyder got her second save of the season with one and a third innings of relief.

Game Two: Dayton 10 , Eastern Kentucky 9 (12 innings)
The offense picked up for both teams in game two with both teams combining for 32 hits and 19 runs.

EKU got the scoring started off with a two-run home run from Sarah Fobbs in the first inning.  Dayton would come back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first on a Kailee Budicin RBI single, as well as a Kennedy Haynes RBI single.

The Colonels would answer back with four runs in the top of the second on five hits.  Dayton got one back on a Gabrielle Snyder RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.  They got another one back off a wild pitch that scored Budicin in the third.

EKU would continue the offensive attack with two runs in the top half of the fourth, but Tiffany Ricks would answer right back with her third home run of the season, a two run shot to cut the lead to two.  In the fifth, Haynes would hit her third home run on the season to cut the lead to one.

The Flyers would go on to tie the game with a Kayla Haberstich single on her final strike in the bottom of the seventh and send the game to extra innings.  EKU and Dayton would trade runs in the first extra frame, and both go scoreless in the ninth. tenth, and eleventh.

Mariano was the hero in the 12th inning with a bases loaded RBI single to win the game for the Flyers.

English would pick up her team high sixth win of the season after pitching four innings of relief in the extra frame.  She did not give up a hit, and struck out three.

Dayton continues its home schedule and opens up Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a three game set against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.  First pitch of the first game is set for noon on Saturday, March 21.
