PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Dayton baseball team cruised to an 11-1 win over the Explorers in the second game of the series on Saturday.
The Flyers got out to an early lead in the top of the first with an RBI triple to right by senior
A.J. Ryan. Sophomore
Robbie Doring then followed up with an RBI double to right, putting Dayton up 2-0.
UD added to its lead in the second with an RBI single by senior
Zach Schira to left, making it a three-run game in favor of the visitors.
In the top of the fourth, Dayton scored again, this time with senior
Alex Harris reaching home on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Nick Gobert made it a 6-0 Flyer lead with a two-run single to right in the same frame.
Senior
Greg Rhude added to Dayton's lead in the seventh with an RBI single to left. Schira drove in his second run of the game as well with a double to right center, pushing the Flyers' lead to 8-0.
La Salle managed to break up the shutout in the eighth with a single run, but Dayton quickly got it back in the top of the ninth when Gobert scored on an attempt to throw out a stealing Schira at second. Harris then put the Flyers in double digits with an RBI double down the left field line. Before the frame was done, junior
Aaron Huesman would score on a throwing error, making it an 11-1 contest.
With such a large advantage, the Flyers were able to blank the Explorers in the bottom of the ninth and held on to the 11-1 victory.
The Flyer offense exploded for 11 runs on 17 hits and benefited from three La Salle errors. Eight different Dayton players recorded at least one hit and six had multi-hit games. Gobert led the way with a 4-for-5 day, two RBI, a double, and a run while Schira went 3-for-5 with two RBI, a double, and a run as well.
Starter
Noah Buettgen (W, 1-3) had his best outing of the season and one of the best of his Dayton career with a personal best of 12 strikeouts, no walks, and just one unearned run on six hits. The senior from Liberty Township, Ohio tossed his first complete game of the season and his 12 strikeouts matched an Atlantic 10 best this year.
The Flyers (7-17, 1-4 A-10) will finish up their series with La Salle on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.
