#UDSB COMPLETES SWEEP OF SJU WITH 6-1 SUNDAY WIN

Flyers Equal Program Record with 12th Atlantic 10 Win of the Season

PHILADELPHIA - With a 6-1 win Sunday afternoon, the University of Dayton softball team completed the three-game series sweep of Saint Joseph's. Offensively for the Flyers, senior Natalie Mariano and sophomore Gabrielle Snyder both were 2-for-3 at the plate.

Dayton's (28-11, 12-2 A-10) pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts while Saint Joseph's (20-12, 6-5 A-10) did not record a single K on the afternoon. With 12 Atlantic 10 wins, Dayton equals the program record for most league victories.

"I was pleased with the way we created scoring opportunities and took advantage of mistakes," commented head coach Cara LaPlaca.

The first two Dayton batters of the third inning were put out but Mariano singled to second and junior Kathryn Hess reached on a Saint Joseph's fielding error. Snyder singled in Mariano and advanced to second on the throw, moving Hess to third, and senior Tiffany Ricks also collected a RBI as her infield single plated Hess. Freshman Kailee Budicin took advantage of another hawk error for two bases and both Flyers on base scampered home. UD went into the bottom of the third leading, 4-0.

With runners on first and third in the fourth inning, Junior Kennedy Haynes was able to come across home plate on the Hawks third error of the contest. Mariano took a base on balls and Saint Joseph's went to the bullpen. After the change, Hess was walked to load the bases and freshman Jaclyn Kweder took it to the house on a wild pitch as Dayton went ahead, 6-0.

The Hawks led off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left line and the base runner was brought home on another SJU double. That would be all the offense Saint Joseph's would muster as Dayton held on for the 6-1 win to complete the three-game sweep.

Senior Kayla English (14-5) earned the win in the circle for the Flyers. She tossed four innings, striking out three while walking two and giving up one run on six hits. Freshman Manda Cash worked the final three innings for UD with four strikeouts to one walk.

Madison Clark (15-4) was charged with the loss for the Hawks after throwing 3.1 innings. She walked one and gave up six runs on six hits. Anna Lauterbach worked the final 3.2 innings, walking three and allowing one hit.

Dayton returns to action April 14 with a doubleheader at Ohio. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Athens, Ohio, at Ohio Softball Field.
