DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team picked up a hard-fought 2-1 win over Akron on Wednesday, the second in as many days for the Flyers.
UD is on a two-game winning streak after shutting out the Toledo Rockets on Tuesday.
Akron took the initial 1-0 lead in the game with a pair of hits in the top of the first.
The Flyers were able to tie the contest up at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to left by senior
Zach Schira. Sophomore
Robbie Doring then followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Schira for the go-ahead run.
The pitching staff then held off the Zips in the eighth and ninth to hang on to the second straight victory for the Flyers.
Starter
Mason Kutruff (W, 5-0) had a career outing for the Flyers with eight innings pitched, one run allowed on four hits, and five strikeouts compared to one walk. Sophomore
Nick Gobert (S, 1) earned his first save of the season after pitching the ninth frame.
As a team, the Flyers totaled eight hits with sophomores
Cale Dineen and
Matt Poland adding two-hit games. Schira and Doring provided the RBI as well.
The Flyers (11-24) will head back out on the road for Atlantic 10 play this weekend as they take on Davidson.
