DAYTON BASEBALL LOSES SERIES FINALE TO SAINT JOSEPH’S

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team gave up 14 runs on 15 hits in a double-digit loss to Saint Joseph's in the series finale Sunday.

The Hawks opened up the scoring in the top of the first with two outs on a walk and a pair of hits. They continued their attack in the second with five more runs, making it a 6-0 game.

Saint Joseph's scored three in the third to push its advantage to nine runs.

Dayton managed to get on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout by senior A.J. Ryan. Sophomore Matt Poland went on to draw a bases-loaded walk for the Flyers' second run of the contest.

The Hawks got their 10th run in the fourth with an RBI single. Three more runners scored in the same frame to make it a 13-2 Dayton deficit.

Another unearned run in the eighth increased the margin to 12 runs at 14-2. Dayton got the run back in the bottom of the ninth, but that was all the scoring Saint Joseph's would need to take the game and the series.

The Flyers had seven hits in the contest, but left 11 runners stranded. Doring went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Dayton while Ryan, Poland, and redshirt sophomore Mitch Coughlin provided the RBI.

Starter Noah Buettgen (2-5) was touched up for six runs on six hits in the first two innings before giving way to the bullpen. Freshman Tyson Schnitkey pitched the third before fellow newcomer Danny Hentz pitched the next four frames. Freshman Mason Kutruff, redshirt freshman Jason Johnson, and freshman Eric Ashbrook rounded out the day for UD.

The Flyers (12-30, 3-15 A-10) will take the week off before heading to Xavier Friday for a 4 p.m. contest.
