DAYTON’S NINTH-INNING RALLY EARNS FLYERS 5-4 VICTORY

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to take a 5-4 win over Alabama A&M Sunday.

With the victory, the Flyers split their series with the Bulldogs on the weekend.

A&M struck first in the top of the second with an RBI double to center.

Dayton responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double by senior Greg Rhude, which scored fellow senior Zach Schira from second.

Alabama A&M's Julio Nunez then hit his 11th home run of the season in the fourth to put the visitors back on top, 2-1.

That score held until the top of the ninth when the Bulldogs added to their advantage with an RBI single and an RBI double following a pair of Dayton errors. That pushed the score to 4-1.

The Flyers' rally attempt began in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single to right by sophomore Cale Dineen after Rhude doubled to lead off the inning. Junior Aaron Huesman then followed with an RBI double to left, scoring UD's third run and putting a runner on third with nobody out.

After two quick outs, senior Zach Schira stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped an RBI single to shallow left that allowed two runners to score and gave Dayton the comeback victory.

The Flyers had nine hits in the contest, four of which came in the fateful ninth. Rhude finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Schira drove in a pair while going 2-for-3.

Starter Noah Buettgen (W, 3-6) pitched a complete game, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits while striking out three.

The Flyers (13-32) will next head to Ohio on Tuesday, May 5 for a 6 p.m. contest before traveling to Butler the following day for a 3 p.m. game.
