ST. LOUIS - The University of Dayton women's basketball team dropped a 70-56 decision at Saint Louis Saturday night at the Billikens' Chaifetz Arena. Freshman Lauren Cannatelli led the Flyers with a career-high 21 points. With the loss, UD falls to an even 8-8 on the season and 1-4 in Atlantic 10 play while SLU improves to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in league action.
GAME BREAKDOWN
• 1Q: Sophomore Jenna Burdette scored the Flyers' first basket to give UD an early 3-2 lead over SLU. The Billikens were able to go ahead by six in the first quarter but freshman Lauren Cannatelli made three free throws at the end of the frame to pull the Flyers within three, 13-10, to end the period.
• 2Q: Cannatelli's three-point basket with just over six minutes to play in the half gave Dayton a one-point, 19-18, advantage. Burdette scored the last bucket of the second to get UD to within one point of SLU, 24-23. Dayton narrowly won the battle of the boards over the first 20 minutes of play, 24-22.
• 3Q: Junior Saicha Grant-Allen scored the first bucket of the third period as the Flyers went ahead, 25-24, but the Billikens rattled off 16 of the next 20 points to break open a 13-point, 41-28 lead. A jumper from freshman Ashleigh Parkinson with just 16 seconds to play in the third cut into the SLU lead, pulling UD within six, 45-39.
• 4Q: Senior Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova scored a basket with just over seven minutes remaining to set the score at 52-46 in favor of Saint Louis but that would be as close as Dayton would get. There would be 22 combined free-throw attempts over the last 2:51 of regulation and the Billikens were able to claim the 14-point, 70-56, win over the Flyers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Freshman Lauren Cannatelli scored a career-high 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 night at the line.
• Junior Saicha Grant-Allen grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her seven points.
• Saint Louis was led by Aaliyah Covington with 21 points and Denisha Womack with nine rebounds.
KEY STATS
• Dayton out-rebounded Saint Louis, 45-43, and 24 of UD's points were in the paint compared to 14 for SLU.
• Neither team shot exceptionally well from the line as Dayton made 10 of 15 attempts (66.7%) and Saint Louis went 17-for-28 (60.7%).
