PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team hit its free throws and played strong defensively down the stretch as the Flyers defeated Princeton University, 62-56, in overtime.
The Flyers (2-1) continued to play well offensively and off the bench as they outscored the Tigers (0-3), 35-20 from the reserve players.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 15, Princeton 13
Both teams went back and forth in the first quarter with the Tigers jumping out to a 6-2 lead before the Flyers stormed back and took a 10-8 lead on a
Jenna Burdette layup. Dayton managed to keep that advantage until the end of the quarter with a 15-13 lead. UD spread the ball offensively with six different players getting on the scoresheet in the first.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 24, Princeton 32
The second quarter started the same as the first with both teams jockeying for control of the tempo. Eventually the host Tigers put a run together and took a 23-17 lead over the Flyers. The gap got as large as 10 in the final minute with most of Princeton's damage coming in the paint or at the free throw line. UD went into the break shooting 33.3%, matching the Tigers from the field.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 43, Princeton 41
The Flyers cut into the gap with a big three by sophomore
Lauren Cannatelli heading into the media timeout, making it a five-point game at 37-32. Another couple of quality possessions later and another Cannatelli three pulled the Flyers within one at 39-38. RS-junior
Alex Harris then hit a crucial free throw to tie the score before a Cannatelli layup put Dayton ahead, 41-39, heading into the final minute. The third quarter ended with the Flyers ahead 43-41.
4th Quarter – Dayton 50, Princeton 50
Princeton scored two unanswered baskets to take the lead back 45-43, but Dayton quickly responded and tied it up at 45-45. Senior
Kelley Austria hit a big three to put the Flyers on top 48-45 going into the media timeout. The Tigers answered with a tough three to tie the game up at 50-50 with :40 to go in regulation. That score held until overtime.
OT – Dayton 62, Princeton 56
A pair of Harris free throws put Dayton in front 57-56 before two more free throws from Burdette gave the Flyers a 59-56 lead with :24 remaining. Princeton looked to tie the game with a three-point attempt but a clutch block by junior
JaVonna Layfield sealed the fate. Free throw shooting and defense clinched the victory for the Flyers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Flyers shot 29.3% from the field and held the Tigers to 28.2%.
- Cannatelli led UD with 13 points, including 3-of-9 from three-point range.
- Harris recorded her first double-double as a Flyer, grabbing 14 rebounds and chipping in 11 points.
- Scaife continues a strong freshman season with her second double-digit scoring game in her two appearances this year. She also had her first career double-double with 10 rebounds.
- Dayton hit 66.7% of its free throws, going 12-of-18.
- UD out-rebounded Princeton 59-53, with 15 of those coming on the offensive end.
- In the first half, Dayton and Princeton both shot 33.3% from the floor, but the Tigers' advantage came with 8-of-11 from the free throw line while the Flyers were 3-of-5.
- There were five lead changes and seven ties in the game. Dayton trailed by as much as 11 and came back to win. The Flyers' largest lead was the final score.
- Dayton committed a season-low 18 turnovers.

- The Flyers had 35 points off the bench, making up 57% of their points. Cannatelli's 13 points led that charge.
