BIMINI, Bahamas – The University of Dayton women's basketball team finished off the 2016 Junkanoo Jam with a tough 56-53 loss to Creighton University in the Bahamas.
The Flyers (2-4) finished fourth in the Freeport Bracket of the tournament while the Bluejays (2-3) earned third place.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 17, Creighton 10
The Flyers jumped out to an early lead on baskets by juniors
Jenna Burdette and
JaVonna Layfield. UD led 9-4 after the first four minutes of play. Layfield added another three to help the Flyers to go the first media timeout with a 12-6 advantage. Dayton enjoyed an 8-0 run over three minutes and extended the lead to 17-6, the Flyers' largest of the first half.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 25, Creighton 24
The Flyers held that gap to start the second and held an eight-point lead going into the media timeout, 23-16. The Bluejays narrowed the margin down to four in the final minute 25-21. It was a low-scoring quarter for both teams with UD totaling eight points and Creighton scoring 14 points.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 42, Creighton 43
Creighton took the lead with five unanswered points, leading 29-25. The Bluejays pushed their advantage to seven at 34-27 before Flyer free throws pulled UD back within four at 34-30. Going into the final three minutes of the period, freshman
Jayla Scaife hit a crucial three to tie the game up at 38-38 with the momentum in Dayton's favor. The two teams traded baskets over the final two minutes and the third quarter ended with the Flyers down just one.
4th Quarter – Dayton 53, Creighton 56
The fourth quarter was fast-paced from the get-go with the Flyers taking the lead back at the 6:51 mark with a layup by senior
Kelley Austria. Dayton and Creighton proceeded to trade baskets and the lead back and forth. At the media break, the Flyers were down one, 51-50. The Bluejays came out of the timeout with five quick points and held the lead for the remainder of the game. UD had a look at the game-tying three, but was unable to convert.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Kelley Austria earned Junkanoo Jam Freeport Division All-Star honors.
- Dayton shot 39.1% in the first half while holding Creighton to 21.2% from the field, including 12.5% from three-point range.
- The Flyers finished the game shooting 37% from the field, 36.4% from three, and 75% from the free throw line.
- UD matched Creighton in points in the paint, points off turnovers, and second-chance points. The Flyers held a 20-7 bench scoring advantage.
- Scaife led UD with 15 points and added four rebounds.
- Grant-Allen had 12 points and seven rebounds in the contest.

KEY STAT
- Creighton hit 12 of its 13 free throw attempts while Dayton hit 9-of-12. The three points proved to be the difference in the contest.
