DAYTON ROLLS PAST UMASS 77-65

DAYTON – Four Flyers notched double-digit scoring efforts and the University of Dayton outlasted Massachusetts 77-65 on Saturday afternoon at UD Arena for its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season.

The Flyers (7-7; 1-1 A-10) have now won four of its last five games, while UMass (6-9; 0-2 A-10) has lost three straight.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 15, UMass 13
The Flyers opened up the game on fire, bursting ahead thanks to a 12-2 run over the Minutewomen. The visitors responded, however, and ended the quarter on an 11-3 run. Junior Jenna Burdette led the Flyers in the opening stanza, scoring six points, pulling down four rebounds, and dishing out three assists.

2nd Quarter – Dayton 36, UMass 30
Dayton built up its lead to as many as 10 in the second quarter, but Massachusetts continued to pound the paint and brought the game within six by the halftime buzzer. UMass outscored Dayton 22-10 in the paint during the first half, but the Flyers were red-hot from the floor, connecting on 40% (6-of-15) of their threes, and shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

3rd Quarter – Dayton 54, UMass 50
UD came out of the halftime break sluggish, as the Minutewomen outscored the Flyers by two in the period. Dayton weathered the storm and never relinquished the lead, as sophomore Lauren Cannatelli knocked down a three with just over two minutes to go in the quarter that put UD ahead for good.

4th Quarter – Dayton 77, UMass 65
Dayton put the game on ice in the fourth quarter with strong defense and clutch free throw shooting. The Flyers allowed just 15 points in the period and were able to connect on 92% (11-for-12) from the free throw line.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
•    Burdette led Dayton with 21 points, and added five rebounds and nine assists.
•    The other Flyers in double-figures were senior Saicha Grant-Allen (16), junior JaVonna Layfield (15), and senior Kelley Austria (11).
•    Grant-Allen and Layfield both registered double-doubles, as Grant-Allen had 13 rebounds and Layfield pulled down 10.
•    Layfield grabbed eight rebounds in the fourth quarter alone.
•    Austria also tallied five assists and three steals.
•    Dayton shot 39.3% from the field and 36% from behind the three-point line.
•    The Flyers dominated the rebound battle 42-31 and also came away with an 18-10 advantage on second chance baskets.

KEY STAT
83.3% - Dayton connected on 83.3% of its free throws, going 20-for-24 from the charity stripe. UMass only attempted 13 free throws.
