OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team won in dramatic fashion at St. Bonaventure Wednesday night on a game-winning three-pointer by senior
Christy Macioce with 0.8 seconds left on the clock.
The Flyers (8-7, 2-1 A-10) handed the Bonnies (6-9, 1-2 A-10) their first conference loss at home since Feb. 25, 2015.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 13, St. Bonaventure 17
The Flyers jumped out to an early lead after back-to-back buckets in the post by senior
Saicha Grant-Allen. St. Bonaventure's Mariah Ruff answered with eight points of her own to give the host Bonnies the lead 10-8 at the media. Dayton stormed back and tied the game up at 11-11 with a big three by sophomore
Lauren Cannatelli. UD hung with SBU throughout the first quarter, but a late surge had the Flyers trailing by four at the end of the period.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 31, St. Bonaventure 33
Dayton responded to start the second and scored five quick points on a layup by redshirt junior
Alex Harris and a three by redshirt senior
Kelley Austria, forcing a SBU timeout as UD led 18-17. The Bonnies' first bucket didn't come until the 6:30 mark in the quarter. SBU made a run of its own and took the lead back at 29-28 with two minutes remaining, but a three by freshman
Jenna Giacone put UD back on top 31-29. Once again, the Bonnies were productive down the final stretch and led going into the locker rooms at the half.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 47, St. Bonaventure 45
Austria came right out and hit a clutch three to put Dayton back on top 34-33 to start the second half. The Flyers pushed the margin to four multiple times, but the Bonnies found ways to stick within striking distance of UD. By the media timeout, Dayton led SBU 42-40. Both teams went back and forth for the final few minutes, jockeying for control of the momentum. UD was up by two going into the final period.
4th Quarter – Dayton 62, St. Bonaventure 60
The final quarter began with the host Bonnies taking the lead back 53-47 with a couple of quick buckets amidst an 8-0 run over the first 2:07. Dayton's first point came at the 6:07 mark on a free throw by junior
JaVonna Layfield, making it a five-point game at 53-48. A foul and a technical by SBU gave the Flyers four easy points from the free throw line, giving UD a 54-53 advantage. The Bonnies responded with a pair of free throws of their own to lead 55-54. Dayton pulled back ahead once again, making it seven straight points for the Flyers from the charity stripe. SBU hit two more free throws with eight seconds left to lead 60-59. Senior
Christy Macioce then went down and hit the game-winning three from deep with just 0.8 seconds left on the clock to seal the win for the Flyers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Dayton was out-shot in the game 42.9% to 39.6%, but hit one more three-pointer and one more free throw than SBU.
- Austria led UD with 14 points and hit all six free throws, while dishing out four assists.
- Layfield had her second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go with two steals and a block.
- Cannatelli and Grant-Allen both added nine points each while Harris chipped in eight points and 11 boards.
- Mariah Ruff was SBU's leading scorer with 25 points, including five three-pointers. She had the last shot for the Bonnies as time expired, which rimmed out.
- UD had 18 points from the bench compared to SBU's seven. The Flyers also had a 25-9 second chance point advantage and out-rebounded the Bonnies, 38-31.
- In the first half, Dayton shot 39.3% from the floor while SBU shot 52%.
- This was the first A-10 loss at home for SBU since losing to La Salle on Feb. 25, 2015, dating back nine games.
- Dayton forced 21 turnovers from SBU, the second-most this season.
KEY STAT
- 25 – Dayton had 25 second chance points compared to St. Bonaventure's nine points, thanks to 19 offensive rebounds. That was the second-most offensive boards for UD this year.
