KINGSTON R.I. -
Darrell Davis hit a three-pointer with 21.1 seconds left to lift the No. 19/17 Dayton Flyers a 68-66 road victory over the Rhode Island Rams.
The Flyers won their ninth straight game and ended a six-game losing streak in Kingston.
Davis finished with 11 points, while
Dyshawn Pierre led the Flyers with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Scoochie Smith added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
The win put the Flyers on top of the Atlantic 10 at 11-1. UD also improved to 21-3 overall and 6-1 on the road.
GAME BREAKDOWN- Playing without Kendall Pollard (knee injury), Dayton led 37-33 at the half paced by Miller's eight points.
- The Flyers extended the lead to 48-40 after a Davis three with 13:06 to go.
- However, the Rams roared back and regained the lead, 61-58 with 3:22 to play thanks to a 17-6 run.
- There were 17 lead changes, three in the final 55 seconds.
- Pierre put the Flyers back ahead 64-63 with two free throws and 56 seconds remaining. The Rams countered with a bucket 15 seconds later to regain the advantage 65-65.
- That set up Davis' game-winner thanks to some great ball movement.
- Rhode Island's Four McGlynn missed a shot with 4 seconds left, and Steve McElvene hit one free throw with 0.3 seconds left to clinch it.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS- Dayton's 21-3 start is also the best in the Archie Miller era and the most successful since the 2008-09 campaign when the Flyers also went 21-3.
- The Flyers are in first place in the Atlantic 10 and have not been 11-1 in league play since the 2002-03 season.
- The magic number is three. Dayton is 18-0 this season when three or more players score in double figures.
- Dayton out-rebounded the Rams 34-26. The Flyers are now 17-1 this year when out-rebounding opponents.
- The Flyers are 6-0 this year when Darrell Davis scores in double figures.
- Dayton has gone 76 consecutive games without two straight losses. It is the third-longest active streak in the NCAA behind Villanova and Kansas.
