PHILADELPHIA – Five Flyers scored in double figures, but No. 15/13 Dayton had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 79-70 loss to the Saint Joseph's Hawks.
Dyshawn Pierre registered a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Charles Cooke led UD with 16 points and
Scoochie Smith tallied 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Off the bench,
Darrell Davis added 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Steve McElvene added 12 points.
GAME BREAKDOWN- Playing its second game without Kendall Pollard, Dayton trailed 36-27 at the half. UD was 1-of-2 at the free throw line, while the Hawks were 7-of-14 at the charity stripe.
- Dayton cut it to 48-40 with 13:44 to play after a Pierre made free throw. But the Hawks would extend the lead to 63-50 with less than seven minutes to play.
- The Flyers countered and went on a 7-0 run and cut the deficit to 63-57 with five minutes to play.
- UD cut the lead even further after a Scoochie Smith layup to 66-61 at the 3:21 mark.
- The Hawks came out of the break with a three to go up 69-61.
- Darrell Davis sank a three with 37 seconds to go to cut the deficit to 75-68. The Hawks though would keep their distance and pulled away with a home win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS- Dayton has not won at Saint Joseph's since 2000. UD has now lost eight straight.
- It is the first game lost this season where Dayton had 3 or more players score in double figures. UD was 18-0 previously when that happened.
- The loss drops Dayton to 21-4 overall and 11-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers are now in a three-way tie for first with Saint Joseph's and VCU in the league.
- Free throws were a huge difference maker in the contest. SJU went 16-of-24 at the free throw line (67 percent), while Dayton shot 2-of-7 (28 percent) at the charity stripe.
- Dayton shot 26 percent (8-of-31) from beyond the arc. The 31 attempts were a season-high.
