Dayton, Ohio –
The University of Dayton men's basketball team (22-6, 12-4 A-10) rallied late but fell to the Rhode Island Rams (16-13, 8-8 A-10) at UD Arena by a score of 75-66.
Dayton, who entered the game 22nd in the USA Today/Coaches Poll, has dropped three of its last four and drops to third in the A-10 standings.
Dyshawn Pierre led the Flyers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, notching his fourth straight double-digit rebounding game. Jared Terrell of Rhode Island led all scorers with 18 points.
Game Breakdown• Rhode Island controlled the game early, starting on an 11-0 run built on a 3-for-3 start beyond the three-point line from Four McGlynn and Jarvis Garrett.
• As the Rams started out hot from the field, the Flyers came out just as cold, missing their first seven field goals. Dayton's first basket came at the 15:18 mark from a
Dyshawn Pierre floater.
• The Flyers managed to break out of their early slump by tightening their defense. Dayton held the Rams without a field goal for nearly four minutes, which allowed them to go on a 6-0 run and get back in the game.
• Unfortunately, this run was short-lived for the Flyers as strong offensive execution by the Rams led to wide open baskets as evidenced by their 57.7% field goal percentage in the first half. This percentage, in comparison to the Flyers' 40.7% shooting, allowed Rhode Island to enter halftime up 38-25.
• The second half began much like the first, with the Rams coming out with strong shooting 4-8 from the field while the Flyers were just 2-9 putting them down 47-31 at the 15:46 mark.
• Rhode Island kept up their pace for much of the second half, maintaining their lead to above 10 points, even getting it to as large as 65-46 at the 6:06 mark.
• Despite the deficit, the Flyers began to put the pressure on the Rams, resulting in a 9-0 catalyzed by two
Kyle Davis steals and baskets, putting the Flyers down 65-58.
• Unfortunately, that is as close as the Flyers got, as Four McGlynn sealed the game for the Rams with seven of his own points, creating a final score of 75-66.
Inside the Numbers•Â
Dyshawn Pierre had a double-double, totaling 17 points and 11 rebounds, both of which led the team against Rhode Island. It was also his fourth straight double-digit rebounding performance. Pierre also shared team honors in assists (3) with no turnovers.
•Â
Charles Cooke was the only other Flyer who scored in double figures, adding16 points.
• The Flyers had a heavy advantage in fast break points, scoring 16 to Rhode Island's two.
• The Flyers narrowly outrebounded the Rams 30-29, which makes it only the second time this season the Flyers have lost while winning the rebounding margin.
• The loss marks as the first for Dayton when they have both
Kendall Pollard and
Dyshawn Pierre playing. Their record this season with both in the lineup is 11-1.
• Pollard came off the bench after missing the last four games with a bone bruise in his knee. He scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in 24 minutes.
