HIGH POINT, N.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team managed to tie the game late, but a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth gave host High Point the victory.
The Flyers (0-7) had a late surge with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but the Panthers (6-3) had the final at-bat and capitalized.
SCORING BREAKDOWN- Bottom of the 3rd – High Point opened the scoring and then some in the bottom of the third with a two-run single and three other RBI singles. Dayton 0, High Point 5
- Top of the 5th- Dayton managed to load the bases with nobody out before an RBI single by Mitch Coughlin broke up the shutout. Nick Weybright then added his own RBI single to short before Robbie Doring closed the gap to one run with a two-run single to left-center. Glenn Jones then hit a crucial single to right, evening the game up at 5-5. Nick Gobert provided the final run with an infield single, putting Dayton on top. Dayton 6, High Point 5
- Bottom of the 5th – High Point tied the game up by scoring on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly then put the Panthers back ahead by one. Dayton 6, High Point 7
- Bottom of the 6th – The Panthers added to their lead with a pair of runs on a two-run single to left. Dayton 6, High Point 9
- Top of the 8th – Sam Sustersic hits an RBI double, scoring Aaron Huesman for Dayton's seventh run of the game. Dayton 7, High Point 9
- Top of the 9th – Doring hit a two-run blast to tie the game up at 9-9. Dayton 9, High Point 9
- Bottom of the 9th – After loading the bases, High Point got an infield single to score the winning run. Dayton 9, High Point 10
KEY STATS- As a team, Dayton racked-up season highs with 14 hits and nine runs. The Flyers scored more runs on Friday as they had over the previous four games combined.
- Doring had a career-day for UD, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, a home run, and two runs scored. Coughlin, Sustersic, and Weybright each drove in a run as well, while the latter two had two-hit games.
- Eight different Flyers recorded a hit in the game.
- Dayton had five runs on five hits in the third inning.
- Starting pitcher Charlie Dant gave up seven runs, only three earned, on 10 hits in five innings of work.
- Reliever Kevin Piersol had a strong performance out of the bullpen, throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing Dayton to climb back into the game. The junior righty struck out three while allowing no walks and two hits.
- Masashi Sakamoto (L, 0-1) suffered the first loss of his Dayton career after allowing the winning run in the ninth.
