FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team went into the ninth inning Sunday with a 3-3 tie and the series on the line, and picked up six runs to take the game and the Atlantic 10 series.
The Flyers (10-21, 3-6 A-10) took two of three on the road from the Patriots (10-22, 2-7 A-10). The victory marked the 200th Atlantic 10 victory of Head Coach
Tony Vittorio's career.
SCORING BREAKDOWN- Bottom of 1st – George Mason took the initial lead with a single run on a solo shot to left-center. Dayton 0, George Mason 1
- Top of 3rd – Dayton answered with a solo home run of its own in the third courtesy of Robbie Doring. Dayton 1, George Mason 1
- Bottom of 3rd – The Patriots quickly took the lead back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly. Dayton 1, George Mason 3
- Top of 4th – Cale Dineen pulled the Flyers within one by reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed Cam Silva to score. Dayton 2, George Mason 3
- Top of 5th – Silva drove in a run of his own this time with an RBI single in the fifth, evening the score up. Dayton 3, George Mason 3
- Top of 9th – The Flyers took their first lead of the game in the final inning with an RBI single to short by Connor Echols. Dayton wasn't done though and got another run on a wild pitch, two more on a single by Silva, and RBI singles by Mitch Coughlin and Nick Weybright. Dayton 9, George Mason 3
- Bottom of 9th – The Patriots' comeback attempt started with a two-run triple before an RBI single made it a three-run game. Dayton 9, George Mason 6
KEY STATS- The Flyers out-hit the Patriots 14-11 in the game, and could have score more but left 10 runners stranded.
- Dayton was led by Silva, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while five other Flyers drove in at least one run. Echols added a 3-for-5 day with an RBI and two runs scored. Coughlin also collected three hits and an RBI for UD.
- Doring's home run in the third was his eighth of the year, which ranks third in the Atlantic 10 this season.
- Starter Austin Cline went 6 1/3 innings on the mound for Dayton with three runs allowed on six hits while striking out a career-high 14 batters.
- Reliever Sam Brunner (W, 2-3) earned the win for his 1 2/3 shutout innings of work. Ben Polansky (S, 2) picked up his second save of the season after shutting the door on a rallying Patriot team in the ninth.
- As a staff, Dayton had 18 strikeouts, double the previous season-best.
