SPRING LAKE, Mich. – The University of Dayton competed in the 21
st Annual Lubbers Cup Regatta this weekend in weather that was 20 degrees with winds up to 30 mph.
"Despite some bad weather, the crews managed the wind, cold, and snow," said UD Head Coach Mike Wenker. "Each boat had a few good strokes on the race course and improved from race to race. Grand Valley put together a good race despite the challenging conditions."
The Flyers took second in their heat in the first V8+, beating out Drake and Robert Morris. UD turned in a time of 4:49.2 in the 2000m race.
In the first V8+ finals, Dayton again took second place behind Grand Valley State.
The Dayton V8+ raced again Saturday evening in a time of 6:50.1 and narrowly lost to Eastern Michigan (6:45.5) but edged out Drake and Illinois.
In the Open 4+ heat, the Flyers took third in both heats. The finals of the race were cancelled due to poor conditions.
Races resumed Sunday morning. Dayton's V8+ won its heat in a time of 8:03.2 over Purdue, Marquette and DePaul. The finals were cancelled due to poor conditions.
The Flyers will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16 at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
