TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team came from behind to pick up a 12-10 victory on the road Tuesday.
The Flyers (13-24) trailed the Rockets (8-28-1) early on, 7-0, but countered with 11 runs over the fifth and sixth innings.
SCORING BREAKDOWN- Bottom of 1st – Toledo took the initial lead with a run scored on a wild pitch. Dayton 0, Toledo 1
- Bottom of 2nd – The Rockets doubled their lead with a bases-loaded walk in the second. Dayton 0, Toledo 2
- Bottom of 3rd – Another run in the third on an RBI double to left came before a two-run home run then put the Flyers down even further. Dayton 0, Toledo 5
- Bottom of 4th – Toledo made it 7-0 with an RBI single and RBI double in the fourth. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch then plated the eighth run. Dayton 0, Toledo 8
- Top of 5th – The Flyers woke up in the fifth and scored seven runs before Toledo even recorded the second out. Cam Silva started things off with a two-run double before Nick Ryan scored on a throwing error. Matt Poland drove in a run with a single, followed by Cale Dineen's fielder's choice that scored the fifth run. Robbie Doring capped off the inning with a two-run single up the middle, closing the gap to one run. Dayton 7, Toledo 8
- Bottom of 5th – An RBI single put the host Rockets back up two runs. Dayton 7, Toledo 9
- Top of 6th – Another fielding error allowed Ryan to score before a sacrifice fly tied the game up at 9-9. A bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch then gifted the Flyers their first lead of the game. Dayton 11, Toledo 9
- Top of 7th – Dayton added to its lead with a run on a Toledo error, scoring Silva. Dayton 12, Toledo 9
- Bottom of 9th – A sacrifice fly closed the gap, but Toledo was unable to get any further. Dayton 12, Toledo 10
KEY STATS- The Flyers had nine hits in the game, but benefited from five Toledo errors, resulting in nine unearned runs.
- Cam Silva led UD with a 2-for-3 outing, a double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Poland and Doring drove in a pair of runs while Huesman recorded three hits including a double.
- Dayton drew six hit-by-pitches and seven walks.
- Starter Mason Kutruff pitched 2 2/3 innings before giving way to the bullpen, getting touched up for four runs, three earned, on three hits and five walks.
- A.J. Hemmelgarn and Danny Hentz saw some action in relief before Ben Polansky tossed a perfect seventh frame. Masashi Sakamoto pitched the eighth.
- Jason Johnson (W, 1-0) threw two shutout innings to earn the win while Sam Brunner (S, 2) picked up his second save of the season with a perfect ninth.
