CINCINNATI, Ohio – The No. 9 seeded University of Dayton women's tennis team rallied past No. 8 seed Fordham on Thursday afternoon, winning 4-3 at the Queen City Raquet Club to open up play of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
With the win, the Flyers move on to play top-seeded VCU on Friday at 10 a.m.
Due to inclement weather the match was moved indoors and doubles was to be used in case of a tie after singles.
With Dayton and Fordham tied 3-3 when singles completed, the Flyers rallied to victory with a strong doubles performance, getting a 6-2 win from
Mandy Marchant and
Jade Kawamoto at No. 2 and a 6-0 victory by
Jackie Kawamoto and
Alex Townsend at No. 3.
Dayton's wins in singles came from freshman
Mattea Kilstofte at No. 3,
Jackie Kawamoto at No. 5, and Marchant at No. 6. Marchant clinched the need for doubles play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Kawamoto came out on top 6-3, 6-1, and Kilstofte won 6-2, 7-5.
The win marks the second straight year that UD has won its opening round matchup at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
