OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Dayton softball team used two very different styles to sweep St. Bonaventure in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at Joyce Field, relying on pitching for a 1-0 Game One victory and then slugging its way to an 8-3 win in Game Two.
GAME ONE – DAYTON 1 ST. BONAVENTURE 0
Scoring Breakdown
Top 7th – Senior
Kennedy Haynes crossed home plate after an errant throw trickled away from the first baseman and allowed the Flyers to score the game's lone run.
Key Stats
Sophomore
Manda Cash went over the .500 mark for the first time this season with the victory, tossing eight innings and allowing just two base hits while striking out eight.
The Columbus, Ohio native also sparked the eighth inning rally, singling to lead off the frame before being replaced by a pinch runner.
Dayton had just two other hits; singles by
Hannah DeSalvo and
Jaclyn Kweder.
GAME TWO – DAYTON 8 ST. BONAVENTURE 3
Scoring Breakdown
Bottom 1st – The Bonnies started the scoring with a two-out rally, getting an RBI single that plated the first run of the day for SBU and put the hosts up 1-0.
Top 2nd – Dayton struck back in a big way thanks to
Katie Ryan's three-run home run. The junior followed singles by senior
Krista Gustafson and sophomore
Kailee Budicin with her third round-tripper of the season to give UD a 3-1 lead.
Top 4th – Ryan struck again for the Flyers, knocking in Budicin with a double to left center and then coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior
Kathryn Hess, giving UD a 5-1 advantage.
Top 6th – In almost an exact replica of the fourth inning, Ryan drove in Budicin with a double and later came home on a sacrifice fly, this time by freshman
Kayla Laquiere, putting Dayton up 7-1.
Top 7th – Back-to-back doubles by
Gabrielle Snyder and Gustafson plated the final run of the game for the Flyers and gave them a lead of 8-1.
Bottom 7th – St. Bonaventure tried to make things interesting in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to cut its deficit to 8-3, but they would get no closer.
Key Stats
Ryan's three-hit performance was the first of her career. She finished the game with two doubles and a home run, driving in five and scoring three times as well.
With the win, Snyder picks up her eighth of the season and is now 8-1.
Snyder went 2-for-4 with two doubles at the plate as well, moving into sole possession of second place on the all-time career doubles list. She needs just four more to break Kathleen Maloof's record of 43.
Budicin also had three hits and scored three runs. It was her third three-hit game of the season.
The Flyers' 11 hits on the day marked the fourth time Dayton has had double-digit hits this season.
In total, Dayton pitching struck out 10 Bonnies in the second game, totaling 18 for the double header.
