DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team dropped its first loss of the season Friday night, 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 21-25), to Loyola Marymount at Frericks Center. Junior Amber Erhahon led the Flyers with 11 kills and four blocks.
Dayton moves to 11-1 on the season while Loyola Marymount improves to 7-3 overall.
STATS OF THE MATCH
• Sophomore Lauren Bruns added nine kills and sophomore Margo Wolf passed a match-high 17 digs.
• Junior Jane Emmenecker set a match-high 32 assists to go with four digs and three blocks.
• As a team, Dayton recorded 36 kills to Loyola Marymount tallied 46. The Lions narrowly out-hit the Flyers, .266 to .235.
• LMU was led by Sarah Sponcil with 13 kills and 12 digs, the match's only double-double.
SET-BY-SET
• Set One: Dayton and Loyola Marymount went point for point through a 5-4 Lion lead when LMU put together three-straight points to pull ahead four, 8-4. The Flyers responded with four unanswered to even the set at eight points apiece. The two squads continued to battle through the middle of the set and it was 17-15 in favor of LMU. The Lions used a 6-1 run to jump in front, 23-16. The Flyers rallied to set the score at 23-20 and then held one set point before falling, 25-21, in the first set.
• Set Two: The Lions roared out to a 6-0 lead in the second set but a 4-0 Flyer spurt pulled UD to within two at 6-4. It was a five-point advantage for LMU at 10-5 and the UD deficit was five again at 18-13. Dayton battled back to within two at 18-16 and was only down one, 20-19. A kill from Bruns followed by a Flyer assisted block evened the set at 21-all and the two squads were knotted again at 23-23. Loyola Marymount closed at the game with consecutive points for the 25-23 set-two win.
• Set Three: Dayton and Loyola Marymount were tied at 3-3 early in the third set and thw two stayed close Trailing 5-3, UD used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 9-6 but LMU evened up the frame on a double block. The Flyers managed to get back in front by four, 19-15, but the Lions would not go away. Dayton tied the set at 21-21 but Loyola Marymount scored the last four points of the set to take a 25-21 win.
