DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18) win over George Washington Friday night at Frericks Center.
Dayton improves to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in league play while George Washington moves to 6-8 on the season and 0-1 in A-10 action.
STATS OF THE MATCH
• Junior Jessica Sloan lead all attackers with a match-high 18 kills as one of four Flyers with double-digit kills. Freshman Jamie Peterson chipped in 13 kills for UD.
• Sophomore Margo Wolf was the match's leading passer with 18 digs to go with five assists and three service aces. Junior Maggie Schutter got under 15 digs for UD
• Junior Jane Emmenecker turned in an all-around match with 49 assists, four digs, three kills, three blocks and two service aces.
• George Washington was led by Aaliya Davidson with a team-high 16 kills while Emily Clemens posted the 21-assist, 11-dig double-double.
SET-BY-SET
• Set One: A double block from Emmenecker and Erhahon set the score at 5-3 in favor of the Flyers early in set one but a 3-0 Colonial rally gave GW the slim 6-5 advantage. The set seesawed back and forth and George Washington was again ahead one at 18-17. Dayton then tore through a 7-0 run to reach set point at 24-18. The Colonials held once but the Flyers ended the game ahead, 25-19.
• Set Two: Wolf served up an ace to put Dayton ahead of George Washington, 6-3, in the second set. The Colonials returned the favor, serving up an ace to give GW a 10-9 advantage and George Washington was up four at 17-13. Dayton rallied to even the set at 23 points apiece and held three set points before winning the frame, 27-25, and taking a 2-0 match lead.
• Set Three: Dayton was leading by two, 8-6, and again at 10-8 when George Washington used 4-1 run to move in front, 12-11. The Flyers evened the score at 12 points apiece but the Colonials exploded for six-straight points, earning the 18-12 lead. UD cut it to three, 19-16, but the Colonials hung on for the 25-19 third-set win to stay in the match.
• Set Four: The Flyers scored the first five points of the fourth set and were ahead 9-2 when the Colonials signaled for timeout. Sloan's service at 12-5 put Dayton up seven and Flyer lead was seven again at 18-11 following a kill from Peterson. Fighting to stay alive, George Washington got to within four, 21-17, but Dayton put the set away, 25-18, and took the match, 3-1.
