SAN DIEGO COMES OUT ON TOP OF WILD PFL OPENER, 34-22

SAN DIEGO – The University of Dayton Flyer football team came out on the short end of a contest of two Pioneer Football League heavyweights Saturday in San Diego, losing to the Toreros by the final of 34-22.
The two teams shared the PFL title a year ago, and between them, have won 19 PFL championship between them.

SCORING
• The teams traded blows for nearly all of the first quarter until USD drove 80 yards on 11 plays to score with 12 seconds left.  The drive was aided by a running into the punter call after the defense appeared to have forced another three-and-out.  Anthony Lawrence hit tight end Ross Dwelley for a 16-yard TD.  San Diego 7, Dayton 0
• Dayton tied the game with 1:26 left in the half on an 80 yard drive built by the arm and feet of quarterback Alex Jeske.  Jeske ran three times for 15 yards, and completed three-of four passes for 65 yards.  The score came on a 17-yarder to Adam Trautman.  Dayton 7, San Diego 7 at halftime.
• The Toreros had another long (71 yards) drive the first time it had the ball in the second half to regain the lead.  Fullback Tevin Heyward dove in from the one.  San Diego 14, Dayton 7
• A fumbled snap gave San Diego a short field to work with, but it took them nine plays to go 37 yards. Jonah Hodges scored on a seven-yard run.  San Diego 21, Dayton 7
• The Flyers responded with a 71-yard drive of their own, helped in part by a roughing the kicker penalty.  Jeske scored from the one to make the score San Diego 21, Dayton 14.
• Moving into the fourth quarter, UD took the lead on what might be the craziest back-to-back plays in Flyer football history.  USD moved into Dayton territory and was lined up to punt from the UD 47.  The low snap went through the Torero punter's hands.  He picked it up and turned upfield, but he was hit and fumbled the ball.  UD special teams captain Chris Hagan picked up the ball at the 31, and weaved his way through a series of would-be tacklers to score.
• Dayton lined up for a potential game-tying PAT kick.  San Diego jumped offside and blocked the kick, but Dayton kicker William Will caught in the air and then threw it under pressure high over the middle, where backup tight end Gus Madden for a two-point conversion and UD's first lead of the night.  Dayton 22, San Diego 21
• After the two teams exchanged punts, San Diego had yet another long (70 yards) drive.  Lawrence was six of seven passing for 63 yards, but it Heyward, who came into the game without a carry on the year, scored his second one-yard TD run.  After an unsuccessful two-point attempt, the score was San Diego 27, Dayton 22
• UD was able to gain one first down, but punted back to the Toreros with two timeouts.  On a third and six at the Dayton 38, Lawrence hit Hodges out of the backfield. The spot of the catch was close to the first down, but Hodge made it moot when he shook off a would-be Dayton tackler and sped down the sideline for a 62-yard catch-and-run game-clinching score.  San Diego 34, Dayton 22
• The Flyers were able to move the ball into USD's end of the field, but an interception by Torero safety Colton Giorgi ended the threat.  Final score:  San Diego 34, Dayton 22
