PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 75-64 win at Duquesne on Tuesday.
The Flyers (10-7, 4-1 A-10) continue to move up the Atlantic 10 standings against a formidable Dukes' squad (9-9, 2-3 A-10).
It was a noteworthy performance for redshirt senior
Kelley Austria who hit the 1,000th point mark in her career with 18 on the night.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 14, Duquesne 10
The Flyers got off to a fast start to the game, pulling out to a 10-2 lead over the host Dukes. Duquesne responded with a pair of threes and closed the gap to four by the end of the first with Dayton leading, 14-10. The Flyers distributed the ball well with five different players scoring in the opening period. Junior
JaVonna Layfield led Dayton offensively in the first.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 32, Duquesne 28
Duquesne opened the second by cutting the margin in half to just two points, and hung with Dayton for the next few minutes. The Dukes took the lead at the 6:29 mark, 19-17, on a big three by Julijana Jojinovic. Duquesne pushed their advantage to four at 21-17 midway through the quarter. Jenna Burdette down stretch gave UD back its four-point lead. She finished the first half with a team-high 10 points, eight of which came in the second.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 56, Duquesne 41
The Flyers came out of the locker room motivated and extended the margin to seven at 38-31 by the media timeout. After the break, Dayton continued to put pressure on Duquesne, starting with a three and a contested bucket by redshirt
Kelley Austria. A layup and a three by sophomore
Maddy Dennis then gave the Flyers their biggest lead of the game, 17, with two minutes still to go in the quarter. That was amidst an 8-0 UD run over 1:29. Duquesne got some late buckets, but Dayton still had a commanding lead.
4th Quarter – Dayton 75, Duquesne 64
The Dukes went on a little run to start the fourth and narrowed the margin back to nine at 56-47 at the 7:38 mark. Austria then scored eight straight points for Dayton to maintain the double-digit lead for the Flyers. By the media break, the Flyers were ahead of the Dukes by 13 at 64-51. For every effort Duquesne made to get back into the game, Dayton was right there to respond and the host Dukes were unable to catch back up with the Flyers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Flyers had one of their best shooting performances of the season, shooting 46.4% from the field, 44% from three point range, and 80% from the free throw line.
- Dayton held Duquesne to 36.7% from the field and 32% from behind the arc.
- Austria had a team-high 18 points to go with three rebounds and a season-high five steals.
- Senior Saicha Grant-Allen had nine points, 16 rebounds, two blocks, and three assists.
- Burdette finished the game with 10 points while Layfield had 15 points and hit all six free throws.
- Dennis finished just one point shy of a career high with 12 points off the bench and played a season-high 21 minutes.
- The Flyers had 23 bench points compared to the Dukes' six points from reserves.
- Chassidy Omogrosso led all scorers with 21 points for Duquesne.
- This is the fourth straight win for Dayton and the sixth in the last seven games.
- Dayton out-rebounded Duquesne 36-35.
- The Flyers led for 33:19 in the contest while the Dukes led for just 3:54.
