#UDWBB TAKES SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST PLACE IN A-10

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team won its seventh straight game and 10th of the last 11 with a 60-48 victory over George Mason on the road Tuesday.

The Flyers (13-7, 7-1 A-10) continue their hot streak away from home while the Patriots (11-11, 4-5 A-10) suffer their second loss in the last three games.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 16, George Mason 14
  • Redshirt senior Kelley Austria scored the first five points for the Flyers while Mason's Kara Wright scored the first five for the Patriots to keep the score at 5-5.
  • Junior Jenna Burdette hit a big three to put UD up 8-5 going into the media timeout.
  • Austria had 10 points in the first quarter out of the 16 total while Burdette and senior Saicha Grant-Allen had three each.
  • The Flyers led 16-9 but a late surge by the Patriots closed the gap to just two.

2nd Quarter – Dayton 31, George Mason 24
  • Dayton added to its advantage to start the second with a couple of big shots by freshman Jayla Scaife and sophomore Lauren Cannatelli, pulling ahead 26-19.
  • By the media break, UD held a four-point lead, 26-22.
  • Dayton got out to its biggest lead 31-22 on an Austria three with a little over a minute remaining.
  • Austria had a game-high 13 points at the half while Scaife added five and Harris had four.
  • Grant-Allen led UD with six rebounds to go with two blocks, two assists, and three points.

3rd Quarter – Dayton 40, George Mason 35
  • The Flyers got the margin back to nine at 34-25 thanks to a couple of tough points by junior JaVonna Layfield. A nice pass by Austria to Grant-Allen under the basket gave Dayton its biggest lead of the game, 11, forcing a Mason timeout.
  • The Patriots suffered during a 3:40 drought in the early stages of the second half. Mason didn't get its first bucket until the 4:40 mark in the third.
  • Dayton kept the margin around the double-digit mark until a spurt by Mason closed the gap to five at 38-33 with 2:12 to go in the period. That would be the difference going into the final quarter.
  • Redshirt junior Alex Harris reached double digits in rebounds with 10 while Grant-Allen scored nine points to go with eight boards.

4th Quarter – Dayton 60, George Mason 48
  • Scaife opened the fourth with four unanswered points to move Dayton back to a nine-point lead. Cannatelli's three pushed it back to double digits, 47-46.
  • Going into the final media timeout, the Flyers held onto a 49-41 lead over the Patriots.
  • The Flyers went on a run of their own to get the advantage back to 12 at 55-43.
  • Dayton hit its free throws down the stretch and held on for the victory over George Mason.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
10 – Austria had 10 points in the first quarter alone out of the first 14 for Dayton.
6 – After hitting just one three in the last game, UD hit six in the first half alone.
38.9 – The Flyers shot 38.9% from the floor, going 21-of-54.
42 to 27 – Dayton outrebounded George Mason by 15.
17 – Austria finished the game with a team-high 17 points to go with three rebounds and three assists.
