DAYTON – Every player in uniform played and 11 of 13 scored Saturday as the University of Dayton women's basketball team won its eighth-straight and 11th of its last 12 games with an impressive 81-51 win over Rhode Island at UD Arena.
The Flyers (14-7, 8-1 A-10) won their fourth straight at home while the Rams (4-17, 0-10 A-10) had to play without leading scorer Charise Wilson, who averages 18.9 points a game.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 24, Rhode Island 6
- Redshirt senior Kelley Austria scored the first five points for the Flyers, for a quick 5-2 UD lead.
- Junior Jenna Burdette hit a big three and Austria stole the ball and scored on the next possession to give the Flyers a 12-2 lead at the first media timeout.
- Austria had 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the first seven minutes that gave the Flyers an 18-2 lead.
- The Rams ended a 5:14 scoring drought with two minutes left in the quarter.
- The Flyers ended the quarter on a 21-4 run, leading to a 24-6 advantage.
- Six points is the lowest total the Flyers have allowed in a quarter since February 7th of last year.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 49, Rhode Island 17
- Dayton added to its lead to start the second with two big threes from Burdette and Austria to give the Flyers a 30-6 advantage.
- The Flyers continued to go on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter.
- UD led 39-8 by the first media timeout.
- Austria had a game-leading 14 points at the half.
- Senior Saicha Grant-Allen led UD with five rebounds to go with five points.
- The Flyers led 49-11 with 1:30 left in the quarter giving the Flyers their largest lead of the season.
- The Rams ended the period on a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 32.
- Dayton shot 46 percent from the field in the first half while keeping the URI under 25 percent.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 61, Rhode Island 30
- The Rams and Flyers traded buckets to start the second half. The Flyers still held a 34-point lead.
- Rhode Island held Dayton scoreless for 3:39 going on a 7-0 run in that stretch to cut the lead down to 27 midway through the third.
- The Flyer field goal drought lasted almost six minutes before sophomore Lauren Cannatelli hit a three to expand the lead to 57-29 with two minutes left in the period.
- URI ended the quarter on a 5:01 field goal drought.
4th Quarter – Dayton 81, Rhode Island 51
- Cannatelli continued to shoot well from beyond the arc, hitting an early three to expand the Flyers lead.
- Dayton built a 69-35 lead at the media timeout.
- URI trailed 76-42 during the final timeout with 3:45 left. Cannatelli added another three before the timeout to make her total making her 4-of-5 from three on the game.
- UD closed out the win against the Rams 81-51.
