ORONO, Maine – The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up the 2017-18 season with a 72-66 win vs. Harvard Friday night at the Maine Tip-Off Tournament at Memorial Gym.
JaVonna Layfield broke career highs in points and rebounds to lead the Flyers. She finished the night with a game-high 20 points, 22 rebounds, and four steals. Her 22 rebounds is tied for second all-time at UD for rebounds in a single game.Â
Alex Harris nearly had a double-double as well with 10 rebounds and nine points.
Jenna Burdette had 17 points and
Jayla Scaife added 13 points.Â

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter:
• The Flyers used a 13-2 run in the final 4:53 of the first quarter to take an 18-12 lead. UD took its first lead of the game on Scaife's layup with 1:20 remaining in the quarter on the dish from
Lauren Cannatelli. Cannatelli scored on a pump fake on the next possession, and Scaife finished out the quarter with a basket with less than nine seconds remaining in the quarter.
• Dayton started off slow, falling behind 10-5, only shooting 20 percent in the first five minutes of the game.
• Five Flyers scored in the first quarter, led by Cannatelli and Burdette with five points each.Â

2nd Quarter:
• Dayton led 35-27 at the half and were up by as many as 33-21 with 4:12 left to play in the first half.Â
• The Flyers hit a drought and did not score another field goal until Layfield's layup with 30 seconds left in the half.

3rd Quarter:
• The Flyers maintained a 55-48 lead after three quarters.Â
• Following the third-quarter media timeout with 4:25 left in the period, Harvard got to within striking distance, only trailing 41-39. Scaife scored five consecutive points to give the Flyers a burst of energy.Â

4th Quarter:
• Seniors Layfield, Harris, and Burdette scored all 17 of the Flyers' fourth quarter points except two by Cannatelli.
• Dayton shot 46.2 percent from the field in the fourth quarter.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Dayton scored 40 points in the paint to Harvard's 26.Â
• The Flyers had 55 total rebounds.
• Dayton had eight steals in the game while Harvard had seven.
• Dayton led for more than 31 minutes of the game.
• Four Crimson players scored in double digits: Katie Benzan (16 points), Taylor Rooks (13), Jeannie Boehm (11), and Madeline Raster (10). Rooks also had a team-high 13 rebounds. The Harvard Crimson went 21-9 last season and finished the year ranked No. 49 in the RPI.Â
KEY STAT
• 22 – Layfield's 22 rebounds is tied for second-most in a single game by a Flyer. She tied Cara Wright, who had 22 vs. Cincinnati on Dec. 22, 2005. Janet Deters holds the record with 27 boards set in 1971.
