#UDWBB Rallies To Win Maine Tip-Off Title

The Flyers Defeated Tulane 71-65 Saturday In The Championship Game

ORONO, Maine – The University of Dayton women's basketball team trailed by nine at the half, but responded in the second half to pick up a hard-fought win over Tulane University in the final game of the Maine Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.  

The Flyers (2-0) finished the weekend undefeated while the Green Wave (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

Besides picking up the tournament title, senior JaVonna Layfield was named All-Tournament Team and tournament MVP while sophomore Jayla Scaife was named All-Tournament Team as well.

KEY MOMENT
10 seconds – With just 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, redshirt senior Alex Harris hit a pair of free throws to give Dayton a 67-65 lead, which they held the rest of the game.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 20, Tulane 13
  • Dayton jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held Tulane scoreless until the 7:08 mark in the first.
  • Going into the media break, the Flyers led 11-4 with five points by sophomore Jayla Scaife.
  • UD led by as much as 11 in the first frame.
  • The Flyers were perfect from the free throw line.
  • Scaife led UD with seven points.

2nd Quarter – Dayton 30, Tulane 39
  • Scaife was the first Flyer to reach double figures scoring, hitting a three to push her tally to 12 points.
  • Tulane closed the gap and tied the game up at 26-26 on a three by Kolby Morgan.
  • The Green Wave took their first lead of the game at the 3:40 mark in the second quarter.
  • Tulane led by nine at the break after trailing by seven entering the second quarter. UD was outscored 26-11 in the period.
  • Scaife's 12 points led the Flyers.
  • The Flyers shot 37.9 percent in the first 20 minutes while the Green Wave shot 55.6 percent.

3rd Quarter – Dayton 51, Tulane 52
  • Both teams opened the second half with three pointers.
  • Tulane extended their lead to 12, but Dayton responded and narrowed the margin to five at 42-37.
  • By the media break, the Flyers were down by seven at 46-39.
  • Scaife scored five unanswered points to make it a 48-46 ball game with two minutes to go in the quarter.
  • At the 1:32 mark, senior Jenna Burdette gave Dayton the lead back with a big three-pointer.
  • UD trailed by one going into the final quarter.

4th Quarter – Dayton 71, Tulane 65
  • The Flyers jumped back ahead at the 7:07 mark with a basket by senior JaVonna Layfield.
  • Dayton held the advantage into the media break and pushed its lead to four at 58-54.
  • Tulane was able to tie the game back up at 62-62 at the 1:50 mark.
  • Senior Alex Harris got her own rebound and scored the putback to give Dayton a 65-62 lead going into the final minute of play.
  • Tulane's Kolby Morgan hit a clutch three with 46 seconds remaining to tie it back up at 65-65.
  • Harris converted two free throws with 10 seconds left to put Dayton up 67-65. Layfield added two more to seal the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
16-of-21 – The Flyers hit 16 free throws in the game, including four in the final 10 seconds of the contest.
53.2 % - Tulane shot 53.2 percent from the field, but still was unable to defeat Dayton.
21 – Dayton had 21 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second chance points.
19 – Jayla Scaife scored a career-high 19 points
10 – Sophomore Jordan Wilmoth also had a career-night with 10 points.
10 & 10 – JaVonna Layfield had her second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, to go with a team-high six assists.
5 – Dayton had five players score in double-figures in the game.

KEY STAT
  • 21 offensive rebounds – The Flyers had 21 offensive rebounds compared to the Green Wave's three, contributing to an 18-3 second-chance point advantage.

  • The Flyers will play their first home game of the regular season when they host Morgan State on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.
