Jayla Scaife Had Career Highs With 24 Points And 11 Rebounds

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's basketball team powered its way to an 82-54 win over James Madison University Sunday at UD arena.
 
The Flyers (6-3) get back in the winning column while the Dukes (3-7) suffered their second consecutive loss.
 
KEY MOMENT
1st quarter – Dayton scored 26 points in the first quarter alone, more than James Madison scored in the entire first half.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 26, James Madison 12
  • Dayton jumped out to a 9-3 lead and pushed the tempo early.
  • The Flyers started the game 5-for-8 while the Dukes were 1-of-4 from the field. Of JMU's first six points, four game at the free throw line.
  • At the media break, Dayton had a seven-point lead at 15-8. Seniors Jenna Burdette and JaVonna Layfield had four points each.
  • The Flyers used a 9-0 run over 2:31 to pull ahead by double figures.
  • Burdette finished the quarter with nine points, going 3-for-3.
  • As a team, Dayton shot 52.6 percent while JMU shot 30.8 percent.
 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 40, James Madison 25
  • The Flyers carried their momentum over into the second quarter and continued to lead by double digits at 31-17.
  • The Dukes went cold from the floor, suffering a 0-for-7 streak and a 3:45 scoring drought.
  • After a technical foul at the 4:58 mark by the JMU bench, a pair of Burdette free throws put UD up 36-17 midway through the quarter.
  • James Madison was unable to get the score much closer despite Dayton going 3:40 without a field goal. The Dukes suffered during a 1-for-15 stretch.
  • Layfield was the first Flyer to reach double figures with 11 points. That went with 10 rebounds to give her a double-double in the first 17 minutes.
  • In the first 20 minutes, Dayton shot 42.9 percent and held James Madison to 22.6 percent shooting.
 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 60, James Madison 43
  • After being blanked in the first half, James Madison hit its first three pointer on its first two buckets in the second half.
  • Dayton got off to a slow start to the third as James Madison pulled within 11 at 44-33. The Flyers drought lasted 2:34 and ended with a free throw by redshirt senior Alex Harris.
  • By the media timeout, the Flyers started to turn things around and led the Dukes 49-37.
  • Sophomore Jayla Scaife hit back-to-back threes to reach double figures herself and pushed the margin back to 15.
  • Dayton ended the third with four straight made field goals.
 
4th Quarter: Dayton 82, James Madison 54
  • Scaife continued to drain it from deep with two more three pointers and hit a career-high 20 points.
  • The Flyers went on an 8-0 run over 2:42 to keep the game out of reach for the Dukes.
  • By the media timeout, Dayton led by 18, 70-52.
  • James Madison was unable to get any closer to make it a game and Dayton powered its way to the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 
24-11 – Scaife had career-highs with 24 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 4-of-7 from three.
13-14 – Layfield also had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
44.3 – The Flyers shot 44.3 percent from the field.
