The Flyers Won Their 10th In A Row

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team won its 10th game in a row at VCU Saturday, 68-48.

The Flyers (16-7, 10-1 A-10) continue their hot streak while the Rams (13-11, 6-5 A-10) have their four-game winning stretch ended by Dayton.

KEY MOMENT
Start of the third quarter – Despite going into the locker room at halftime up 10, VCU still was making runs of its own. That was until the start of the second half when Dayton went on a 14-3 run to put the game out of reach for the Rams.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter – Dayton 17, VCU 10
  • Dayton jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first 30 seconds thanks to a drive by redshirt senior Kelley Austria and a three by junior JaVonna Layfield. The Flyers also got a steal and a block on the defensive end in that span.
  • The Flyers maintained their lead going into the media timeout, up 10-6 on the Rams. Layfield had two early three pointers from the same spot on the floor.
  • The bench came in and contributed right away, led by freshman Jayla Scaife's five points.
  • Layfield led UD with six while Scaife chipped in five.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 31, 21
  • The Flyers extended its lead to 10 to start the second, up 21-11 on the Rams.
  • VCU rallied back to make it a seven-point difference at the midway point in the quarter, thanks to points in the paint.
  • Dayton didn't attempt its first free throw until the 4:32 mark in the second quarter, when sophomore Lauren Cannatelli hit two of two, putting the Flyers up 26-17.
  • The Rams struggled everywhere, but the paint as they continued to pound it inside to try to stay with Dayton.
  • By the end of the second, the Flyers held a 10-point lead over the Rams.
  • Scaife led the way with 10 points while Layfield chipped in nine.
  • UD was shooting 42.3 percent from the floor and holding VCU to 29 percent.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 52, VCU 31
  • Dayton came out firing to start the second half and got its lead up to 20 at 41-21, forcing a VCU timeout with 5:19 to play in the quarter.
  • The Rams didn't get their first point until the 5:16, coming on a free throw.
  • At the media break, UD held a 21-point lead over VCU, 45-24, thanks to a 14-3 run to start the third.
  • The Flyers continued to push the tempo and maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the quarter.
  • Layfield scored nine points in the third quarter alone.
4th Quarter – Dayton 68, VCU 48
  • From the end of the third to the beginning of the fourth, the Flyers got five straight points from the charity stripe.
  • VCU also went on a 2:30 drought with UD going on a 7-0 run to start the fourth.
  • Dayton got the margin to 28 halfway through the final period, forcing a Ram timeout.
  • Fouls on both ends started to slow the game down, but UD already had too large of a lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
20/9 – Layfield led the Flyers with a career-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds. She finished the game 6-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
11 – Three different Flyers scored 11 points each in the game. Senior Saicha Grant-Allen added nine rebounds to her 11 points while Austria and Cannatelli both chipped in 11 of their own.
5 – Five Flyers scored in double figures in the game, along with those mentioned above, Scaife also added 10 points.
45 – Dayton had 45 rebounds in the game compared to VCU's 36.
39:51 – UD led for the majority of the game with the nine seconds being how long it took for the Flyers to score to start the game.
10 – That marks 10 wins in a row for Dayton and 13 of the last 14 games.
10-1 – The Flyers solidified their hold on first in the A-10, moving to 10-1 in league play.

KEY STAT
  • 17% - The Flyers held the Rams to just 17 percent from three point range, their best defensive showing of the season. VCU was just 2-of-12 in a game the Rams trailed throughout.

  • The Flyers will return home to host Richmond Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena. It will be the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer Game with fans invited to wear gold to support the cause.
