Box Score The Dayton men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday at the hands of VCU. The Flyers (2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Rams (4-0), but were unable to hold back a furious rally by VCU, eventually falling by a score of 4-3.
Steven Karl and
Lorenzo Rollhauser were the first pair to finish in doubles with a 6-3 victory in No. 3 doubles over Inigo Torre-Martin and Timo Zgragen. VCU evened up the score after
Jordan Benjamin and Theo Jener dropped a tight 7-6 (4) matchup with Javier Amantegui and Arvid Noren.
Zach Berry and
Carsten Fisher would go on to win the doubles point for Dayton in No. 1 doubles, as the senior tandem defeated Vitor Lima and Philip Mobius in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5).
The Flyers would go on to take a 3-0 lead as a team after two wins in straight sets by
Jordan Benjamin and
Carsten Fisher in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. The Rams would go on to win each of the remaining singles matches to come back and steal the victory. Sophomore
Steven Karl gave Inigo Torre-Martin, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, a fight in No. 6 singles during the clinching match, but ultimately fell by a score of 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Dayton will look to rebound tomorrow with a matchup against Richmond with matches beginning at 9 a.m.
