#UDWBB Overcomes Early Deficit To Dominate Evansville, 69-30

Flyers Outscored The Purple Aces By A 66-14 Margin After Trailing 16-3 In The First Quarter

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team defeated Evansville at UD Arena on Saturday night by a score of 69-30.

The Flyers have now won two straight and their record improves to 4-5, while Evansville lost its seventh in a row to fall to 1-8 on the season.

Jayla Scaife led the Flyers with 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
KEY MOMENT
After falling in a 16-3 hole at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter, Dayton rattled off 17 unanswered points to take a 20-16 lead with 8:29 to play in the second quarter and shift momentum. Dayton held on to the lead for the remainder of the game and held the Purple Aces to just 6-of-44 (13%) shooting in the final three quarters.

GAME BREAKDOWN
  1st Quarter: Evansville 16, Dayton 14
  • Evansville made four free throws to open the game's scoring and take a 4-0 lead.
  • Jayla Scaife connected on a 3-pointer to put Dayton on the board, but the Purple Aces responded with an 12-0 run, including seven points from A'niah Griffin during that stretch, to claim a 16-3 advantage.
  • The Flyers cut the deficit back to just five before the end of the quarter with an 11-0 run of their own, capped off by an Araion Bradshaw 3-pointer with seven seconds in the quarter.
  • Scaife scored seven of Dayton's 14 points in the opening quarter.
 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 34, Evansville 21
  • A Lauren Cannatelli 3-pointer opened up scoring in the second quarter and gave Dayton its first lead of the game at the 9:05 mark. Jenna Giacone canned another 3-pointer with 8:29 to play to extend the Flyer lead to four.
  • Dayton had its 17-0 scoring run that began with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter snapped when Kaylan Coffman made a free throw with 7:50 left in the second.
  • The Flyers ended the quarter once again on an extended scoring run, this time by scoring the final 10 points of the frame. Jayla Scaife's jumper with 26 seconds left in the half put Dayton ahead by a 34-21 margin heading into the break, its largest of the game up to that point.
  • Dayton outrebounded Evansville 24-14 in the first half, including an 8-0 advantage in offensive rebounds.
 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 53, Evansville 25
  • Dayton held Evansville to five points or less for the second straight quarter, outscoring the Purple Aces by a 19-4 margin in the third period.
  • The Flyer defense held Evansville to just 2-of-13 (15%) shooting from the field in the quarter. 
     
4th Quarter: Dayton 69, Evansville 30
  • Freshman Amari Davidson scored her first two career points in a Flyers uniform with on a jumpshot with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Evansville missed 12 consecutive shots during a 6:48 scoreless drought.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
1 – There was just one lead change in the game. After trailing 16-3 early in the game, Dayton went on a 17-0 run to jump ahead early in the second quarter and never surrendered it for the rest of the game.
14 – All 14 Flyers that entered the game reached the scoring column for the Flyers, including Jayla Scaife, who led all scorers with 11 points. Julia Chandler added 10 points to join Scaife in double figures.
9 – Scaife also led Dayton with nine rebounds.
20% – Dayton's defense smothered Evansville to shoot just 11-of-55 (20%) from the field, including a 6-for-44 (13%) mark in the final three quarters.
39 – Dayton's 39-point margin of victory is the largest for the Flyers this season and the widest for the team since Jan. 4, 2018 against Rhode Island (116-58).
 
KEY STAT
After falling in an early 16-3 hole in the first quarter, Dayton outscored Evansville 66-14 throughout the remainder of the game.

UP NEXT
Dayton will travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. for a pair of neutral site contests against Virginia Tech on Dec. 20 and Georgia Tech on Dec. 21, with a 2:30 tip-off scheduled for both matchups.
