DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team split a doubleheader with Ball State on Saturday with a 3-0 win in game one and a 10-2 defeat in the second game. Junior
Austin Cline was nearly flawless in the first game as the starting pitcher for the Flyers. Cline threw a complete game shutout and struck out nine Cardinal batters, while allowing just three hits and walking two.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
Game One: Dayton 3, Ball State 0
Brantley Johnson singled to left field in the third inning to give Dayton its first hit in the game. Johnson then advanced to third following an error by the first baseman and a
Mitchell Garrity walk before scoring on a wild pitch to put the Flyers on the board. Dayton would go on to score two more runs, but they were unneeded, as Cline's complete game shutout ensured that Johnson's run would be enough for the Flyers to win.
Riley Tirotta drove in Johnson for Dayton's second run of the game and also scored off another Ball State wild pitch in the eighth to give Cline an extra insurance run heading into the final frame.
Game Two: Ball State 10, Dayton 2
Ball State took advantage of three singles and two walks in the opening inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead over Dayton in the first. The Cardinals piled on four more runs through five innings before the Flyers got on the board for the first time of the game when
Pat Meehan scored off a
Brandon Smith groundout. Meehan got on base with a leadoff double in the inning. Ball State extended its lead to 10-1, but Dayton added one more run in the ninth when Meehan hit an RBI single to center field to send
Brett Wells across the plate.
