#UDWTEN Defeats George Mason In First Round Matchup

Dayton Will Meet No. 2 George Washington In The Quarterfinals On Thursday At 3 P.M.

Box Score The University of Dayton women's tennis team started off strong at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Wednesday with a convincing 4-0 win over No. 10 George Mason. The win improves Dayton's record to 14-8 overall this season and advances the Flyers into the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they will play No. 2 George Washington tomorrow at 3 p.m.

The Flyers set the tone during the doubles point, as Natalie Allen/Anna Delaney quickly dispatched Nicole Haigwood/Kayleigh Hahn in No. 3 doubles by a 6-0 margin and Jackie and Jade Kawamoto made equally quick work of their opponent in No. 2 doubles, winning by a score of 6-2 to clinch the match's opening point.

The success from the doubles matches carried well over into singles play for Dayton, as five of the six players in the lineup won the first set of their match. Marlys Bridgham and Kelly Pleiman's matches both made it to a third set, but neither were able to finish, as three Flyers won their match in straight sets to clinch the 4-0 win. Jade Kawamoto was the first to earn a victory with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at the No. 3 spot in the lineup and she was followed closely behind by a 6-2, 6-2 win from Natalie Allen on court six. Jade Kawamoto provided the clinching point of the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 4 singles to secure Dayton's spot in the quarterfinals.

Dayton and George Washington will play for the first time this season in tomorrow's quarterfinals match. The Colonials have a 13-8 record this season. Look below for full results and quotes from head coach Erica Echko:

On the team's win:
"We started off well in doubles, which is so important to set the tone of the match. In singles, we just played patient and made them make the extra shot. It was helpful that we have seen them play before, it helps us understand there weaknesses and know where to attack, but they utilized a different lineup today than the first time we played them on Feb. 10 with three of their players on courts four, five and six for singles, but the back half of the lineup countered that with really strong play. We're really happy to have advanced and are looking forward to playing George Washington tomorrow, as we haven't gotten to play them yet."

On whether today's win feels any sweeter after being upset in the first round of the tournament last season by No. 11 Rhode Island:
"I think it does. Last year we came out disappointed, especially since we had defeated Rhode Island earlier in the regular season, so it was a very similar situation this year. We had already played George Mason and beaten them, so we wanted to make sure not to repeat the disappointment from last year and come out on the other side of it this time around."
