Men's Basketball Edges UMass At UD Arena On Sunday, 72-67

Jordan Davis Scored 21 Points To Led Four Dayton Players In Double Figures, As The Flyers Start Out 3-0 In A-10 Play

DAYTON –  The University of Dayton men's basketball team defeated Massachusetts by score of 72-67 at UD Arena on Sunday afternoon to win its sixth straight game and start off Atlantic 10 play with a 3-0 record in the conference. The Flyers now hold an 11-5 record overall this season, while UMass falls to 7-9 on the year with an 0-3 mark in conference play.

First Half: Dayton 38, Massachusetts 33
  • Josh Cunningham opened up scoring with a fast-break layup, then Cunningham and Jordan Davis knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give Dayton an early 8-0 lead.
  • After both teams traded baskets to make the score 10-2, Massachusetts went on a 9-2 run to make it a one-point game.
  • The Flyers answered with a 9-2 run of its own behind two more 3-pointers from Davis to push the lead back to 21-13.
  • Cunningham gave Dayton its biggest lead of the game at 27-17 with 7:22 to play on a layup. It was the only time all game the lead was at double digits, as Luwane Pipkins made a floater for UMass 12 seconds later to cut the lead back down to eight.
  • Djery Baptiste made a put-back jumper with 35 seconds to go for the final points of the opening half. Dayton led 38-33 at the break.
Final: Dayton 72, Massachusetts 67
  • Keon Clergeot (zero first half points) came out firing after intermission, scoring the first 10 points of the half for the Minutement, including a 3-pointer that cut the score to 43-41 at the 17:04 mark.
  • Jordan Davis made a 3-pointer at the halfway point of the second half to push Dayton's lead back up to 59-52, its largest of the second half.
  • The Flyers maintained the lead until the 5:54 mark when Carl Pierre knocked down a jumper in the paint to tie up the game at 63 apiece for the first time since it was 0-0 to open the game.
  • Dayton never trailed, but Rashaan Holloway tied the game back up again at 67-67 with a bucket at the 1:35 mark.
  • Jalen Crutcher broke the tie with a clutch 3-pointer to give the Flyers a 70-67 lead with 1:10 remaining.
  • After Samba Diallo missed a layup on the next possession for UMass, Trey Landers was fouled for Dayton and made one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game.
  • Luwane Pipkins missed a 3-pointer for the Minutemen, then Trey Landers once again split a pair of free throws with two seconds left to round out scoring for the game and seal the 72-67 win.

  • Dayton has scored exactly 72 points in each of its three conference games this season.
  • Jordan Davis led all scorers with 21 points and went 6-of-8 on 3-point field goals.
  • Davis scored 20+ points both games this week, as he scored a career-high 25 against George Washington on Jan. 9. 
  • Jalen Crutcher added 19 points and went 4-of-5 from behind the arc.
  • Josh Cunningham and Trey Landers both scored in double figures for Dayton with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
  • Cunningham also led Dayton with seven rebounds and four assists.
