Men's Basketball Falls On Road To VCU, 76-71

Dayton Will Be Back In Action On Saturday, Jan. 19 At St. Bonaventure With Tip-Off Scheduled For 4:30 P.M. (ET)

Richmond, Va. –  The University of Dayton men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night at VCU by a score of 76-71. The Flyers now hold a record of 11-6 (3-1 A-10) on the season, while the Rams improve to 12-5 (3-1 A-10).
 
The game was tied at 69-69, but a Marcus Evans 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining broke the tie and when Dayton couldn't come up with a bucket the following possession, Evans went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to put away the game.

First Half: VCU 37, Dayton 36
  • Dayton and VCU traded runs early on, as the Rams jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, but the Flyers bounced back with seven unanswered to take an 8-7 advantage into the first media timeout.
  • VCU held a 21-17 lead after a Josh Cunningham layup at the 8:57 mark and the Rams followed with a 10-3 run to extend its lead to 11 – its largest of the half and game.
  • The Rams held the lead for the remainder of the half, but Dayton finished off the half on a 9-0 scoring run, capped off by a Cunningham layup with time expiring, to cut the VCU lead to 37-36 heading into halftime.
Final: VCU 76, Dayton 71
  • Jordan Davis came out from halftime and immediately knocked down his first 3-pointer of the game to put the Flyers ahead to open the second half by a 39-37 margin.
  • Marcus Evans tied up the game at 39-39 for VCU, marking the first of nine ties in the second half.
  • The game was also tied at scores of 41, 46, 48, 56, 58, 63, 65 and 69.
  • After VCU's Marcus Santos-Silva knocked down a pair of free throws to tie up the game at 65-65 with 5:12 to play, Ryan Mikesell gave Dayton the lead right back.
  • Jalen Crutcher made a layup the possession after Mikesell's basket to put the Flyers up 69-65 at the 4:08 mark.
  • VCU tied the game up once again with a pair of free throws – this time from Isaac Vann – at 69-69 with 2:29 to play.
  • Following a nearly two-minute period with no scoring, Marcus Evans broke the tie with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 33 seconds remaining.
  • Jalen Crutcher missed a driving layup on the next possession for Dayton and Evans made four free throws in the final 21 seconds to keep the Flyers from getting back within one possession.
  • The three and the free throws were Evans' first of the game.
By The Numbers
  • Jordan Davis, the Atlantic 10's Co-Player of the Week, led Dayton in scoring for the third straight game with 17 points.
  • Davis shot 6-13 FG, 2-4 3FG, and was a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line.
  • Jalen Crutcher (14 points), Josh Cunningham (13), and Ryan Mikesell (11) joined Davis in scoring double digits.
  • Cunningham and Mikesell also both pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Crutcher led Dayton with six assists.
  • The game was tied 11 different times, including nine occasions in the second half, while the lead changed hands 12 times.
  • Both teams shot similarly from the floor (Dayton: 26-55 (47%); VCU: 27-59 (46%)), but the Rams made nine 3-pointers on 19 attempts compared to just four makes behind the arc for Dayton on 16 tries.
