The Flyers Move To 4-1 In A-10 Play

Dayton -The University of Dayton women's basketball team was able to pull off a strong victory against the Fordham Rams at home on Sunday.The Flyers finished with a score of 72-50 and a number of team and season-highs coming from Jayla Scaife and Shakeela Fowler.

The Flyers (9-7, 4-1 A-10) picked up their third conference win at home against the Rams (12-7, 3-2 A-10).

KEY MOMENT
2nd quarter- The crowd goes wild as UD's Shakeela Fowler makes back-to-back break-away layups (two of her seven field goals that earned her a season high).


GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 16, Fordham 14
  • Dayton starts game off as redshirt junior Julia Chandler wins tip and after a quick turnover, puts the first two points on the board.
  • Well into the game with 5:30 on the clock, Cavanaugh gives the Rams their first 2 points on the board.
  • At around 7:00, Senior, Mary Goulding goes down temporarily with an apparent ankle injury
  • Dayton gains speed as Cannatelli shoots a three just to be followed by Scaife for two bringing the score to 12-2.
  • Game is left at 12-5 Flyers at the media break.
  • Rams begin to push a comeback as Jonassen puts four points on the board with back to back jumpers.
  • Fordham ties it back up to 14-14.
  • Ward brings it to 16-14 as the first quarter comes to a close.
  • After the first half, the Flyers shot 53.8 percent while the Rams shot at 42.9 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 36, Fordham 27
  • Shortly into the second quarter, Phillips snatches a quick rebound and passes to Ward for the first two of the second quarter.
  • Ram's Cavanaugh shoots to tie it up 20-20, but the tie is short-lived as Scaife and Cannatelli put the Flyers ahead again at 24-20.
  • Fowler cuts down the lane for two in a row, impressive layups to bring the Flyers up with a score of 32-24 which forces Fordham to a timeout.
  • Heremaia shoots a three in a desperate-yet successful- attempt to close the score gap between the Rams and the Flyers.
  • Giacone fuels the Flyers momentum and brings the first half to a close leaving the score at 36-27.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 52, Fordham 37
  • Holden of the Rams first points of second half to be followed quickly by a three from Flyer's Brittany Ward.
  • Flyers call the timeout at 41-31, with the Flyers up.
  • Media timeout 43-33, Dayton keeping a consistent lead with lead scorers being redshirt-sophomore Bre Cavanaugh with nine for the Rams and Dayton's junior, Jayla Scaife with 11.
  • With noteworthy plays by Scaife, the Rams call a timeout as Flyers are now up with 49-35.
  • Scaife continues to heat up with a stunning three quickly after the time out.
  • With two score ties and no lead changes, Flyers leave the third quarter up by 15 and have a total of six fast breaks against Fordham's zero.
4th Quarter: Dayton 72, Fordham 50
  • Bradshaw starts out the final quarter with a personal foul, her fourth and Jonassen fouls quickly after, also with her fourth personal foul.
  • After an impressive three from Cannatelli, Fordham calls the timeout, now down by 22 points with 7:01 left on the clock.
  • Giacone hits a beautiful three to bring the game to 62-37 as the Flyers grip a significant lead.
  • Davidson swishes a three for Dayton's ninth three pointer of the game, bringing them to 50 percent behind the arch
  • Ram's McLoughlin goes 1-and-1 at the free throw line to bring the game to a close for a Flyer victory of 72-50
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

13 and 19 – Jayla Scaife  has a season high in rebounds, totaling a sum of 13 along with the game-high in points with a total of 19.
7-  Shakeela Fowler sets a career and season high in field goals made with a total of seven.
62.5 - Lauren Cannatelli shoots a 62.5% in total points going 5-for-8.
38 – Dayton had 38 points in the paint compared to Fordham's 18 points.
27 to 9 – The Flyers had 27 points from their bench while the Rams had nine.

The Flyers went 9-for-19 behind the arch (47.4%) with a total of 11 fast breaks to compete with Fordham's 23.5% behind the arch with a total of zero fast breaks.
