Men's Basketball Erases 22-Point Deficit At GW; Wins Fifth Straight

Dayton Defeated George Washington By A Score Of 72-66 After Trailing By As Much As 22 points. Jordan Davis Set A New Career High With 25 Points.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Wednesday night with a 72-66 defeat of George Washington. The Flyers trailed by as many as 22 points in the first half, but outscored the Colonials by a 42-26 margin in the second half to earn the win.

Jordan Davis led the Flyers with career highs in points (25) and 3-pointers made (7), while Jalen Crutcher dished out a career-best 11 assists. Trey Landers was the second-leading scorer for UD with 12 points on the night.

First Half: George Washington 40, Dayton 30
  • George Washington made each of its first 10 shots of the game, including six 3-pointers to jump out to a 28-6 lead before the second media timeout.
  • Maceo Jack and Justin Mazzulla were responsible for eight points apiece of the Colonials' first 28 points.
  • Dayton went on an 8-0 scoring run, highlighted by back-to-back buckets from Jalen Crutcher that brought the score to 35-24 with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half.
  • A mini 4-0 run to end the half on baskets from Trey Landers and Jordan Davis cut the lead to 40-30 heading into halftime.
Final: Dayton 72, George Washington 66
  • George Washington scored the first seven points of the half to extend its lead back up to 17 shortly after halftime.
  • Jordan Davis scored the first eight Dayton points of the half, as the Flyers trailed 49-38 at the 16:29 mark.
  • A pair of Cunningham free throws and a Trey Landers fastbreak layup cut the George Washington lead to 49-42, the smallest deficit since the score was 10-3 at the 17:47 mark of the first half.
  • The Colonials held a 56-44 lead, but a 13-0 scoring run for the Flyers, capped off by Jordan Davis's fifth 3-pointer, gave Dayton its first lead of the game at the 9:50 mark.
  • DJ Williams gave George Washington the lead back at 59-58 with just over nine minutes remaining, but an Obi Toppin dunk on the following possession gave Dayton the lead back for good.
  • Jordan Davis hit his seventh and final 3-pointer of the game to put the Flyers up 66-59, its largest lead of the game with 4:04 to play.
  • The lead was cut back down to five at 66-61 with under two minutes remaining after a Maceo Jack layup, but Jalen Crutcher and Trey Landers went a combined 6-for-6 at the line in the final 42 seconds of the game to seal the win.
