Men's Soccer Heads To VCU Wednesday

The Flyers Are 1-1 In Atlantic 10 Games This Season

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team remains on the road to take on VCU Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers are 5-6 overall this season with a 1-1 Atlantic 10 mark and a 1-3 road record. Dayton is on a two-game skid, but will be looking to end that against the Rams Wednesday.

Head coach Dennis Currier is in his 15th season at the helm of the Flyers, totaling 144 victories, the most in UD history. He leads a veteran squad this season with seven seniors and 10 returning starters.

Overall, Dayton is scoring 1.82 goals per game and giving up just 1.35 goals to opponents. The Flyers are being outshot 13.9 to 13.1, but are shooting at a higher percentage.

The Flyers are led by junior Jonas Fjeldberg and his team-high six goals to go with 41 shots, 21 of which have been on goal. Freshman Toluwalase Oladeinbo  has added four goals as well. Senior goalkeeper Federico Barrios has four shutouts in 11 starts.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
VCU

VCU enters the game Wednesday with a 4-5-1 record on the season, but is 3-0 in conference play. The Rams are 2-2 at home on the year, but has won two their last three games. Head coach Dave Giffard is in his 10th season in charge.

As a team, VCU is averaging just 1.10 goals per game and allowing 1.40 to opposing teams. The Rams are being outshot 13.0 to 12.0 and shooting at a lower clip.

Leading the Rams is Biska Biyombo, who has three goals and three assists in nine games. Austin Graham is the main provider with three assists on the season. Goalkeeper Mario Sequeira has 35 saves and 1.33 goals against average.

THE SERIES
Dayton and VCU have played six times previously with both teams winning three matches apiece. In last year's meeting, the Flyers won at home 1-0 thanks to a game-winning goal from Fjeldberg.

LAST OUTING
Dayton suffered its first A-10 loss in a 3-2 double overtime defeat at George Mason Saturday after leading 2-0 at the 50 minute mark. The Patriots scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute.

VCU continued its unbeaten streak in conference play with a 2-1 victory at home over Davidson, also in double overtime Saturday.

500 PROGRAM VICTORIES
With a 2-0 victory over No. 20 West Virginia on Sept. 21, Dayton recorded the 500th victory in program history. Biska Biyombo scored a brace including the game-winner in the 108th minute.

TANESKI A SENIOR CLASS CANDIDATE
Senior midfielder Rok Taneski was named as a Top 30 Senior CLASS Award candidate this year, the lone selection from the Atlantic 10. The award is given to a male and female athlete that exhibit excellence in community, classroom, character, and competition.

BARRIOS NAMED A-10 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior goalkeeper Federico Barrios was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30 after recording two shutouts the previous week with six saves.

OLADEINBO NAMED A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman forward Toluwalase Oladeinbo was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Sept. 23 after scoring three goals during a two game stretch for the Flyers.

BARRIOS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
Senior goalkeeper Federico Barrios was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team as the lone keeper. The Colombia native led the league in save percentage last season with a .815 mark and totaled a conference-high eight shutouts to go with 53 saves.

BARRIOS NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Dayton goalkeeper Federico Barrios was named All-Tournament team at the Wolstein Classic on Sept. 1 after his performance in the two game stretch. He recorded a career-high nine saves in the contest against CSUN Sunday.

UP NEXT
Dayton returns home to host St. Bonaventure Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field.
