LAHAINA, Maui – The University of Dayton men's basketball team surpasses Virginia Tech in the semifinals of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. This is the fourth trip to the Maui Invitational, with the Flyers last winning the tournament in 2003.
 
The Flyers were led by Obi Toppin who scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and eight rebounds. Rodney Chatman and Trey Landers both added 13 points each, with Ryan Mikesell adding 10 points.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Half: Dayton 49, Virginia Tech 31
• The game got off to a close start with Dayton and Virginia Tech exchanging buckets.
• The Flyers quickly responded by going on a 10-0 run to bring the score to 12-5 with 15:02 left in the half. 
• Dayton went on a 13-2 run that started at 7:08 left in the half, giving the Flyers a 14-point lead.
• The Flyers defense forced the Hokies into a scoring drought during the last 3:51 of the half.
• Dayton ended the half by going on a 7-0 run that ended with a one-handed put-back slam by Ibi Watson.
• Obi Toppin hit three consecutive three-pointers to score nine straight points for the Flyers late in the half. Toppin finished the half with 14 points and three rebounds.
• Trey Landers and Rodney Chatman both contributed eight points each during the half.
•The Flyers went 8-of-14 (57%) from three in the half compared to just 5-of-12 (42%) from Virginia Tech.
• Dayton out-rebounded Virginia Tech 21-8 in the half. 
• The Flyers led for 17:03 of the half, with the game being tied for only 2:20.
• This is the third consecutive game for the Flyers with an 18-point lead at the half.
 
2nd Half: Dayton 89, Virginia Tech 62
• The Flyers went on a 7-0 run that resulted in a Virginia Tech timeout with 5:01 left in the game. This extended the Flyers lead to 21.
• Dayton went on a 14-2 run shooting 6-of-6 from the field to extend their lead to 26 points.
• Toppin scored an additional 10 points in the second half, putting him at 24 points for the game. 
• He also led Dayton with eight rebounds.
• Jalen Crutcher had a season-high nine assists.
• The Flyers shot 16-of-26 (61.5%) in the half while keeping the Hokies to 40.7 percent from the field.
• Dayton out-scored Virginia Tech in the paint 26-14.
• The Flyers pulled in 17 rebounds in the half.
• Obi Toppin recorded his 100th career dunk. 
• The Flyers made their final 10 shots from the field.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Dayton led for 37:03 of the game. The Hokies lead for 0:37 during the onset of the game.
• There were 11 Flyers that scored in the game, with Toppin, Chatman, Landers and Mikesell scoring in double-figures.
• Toppin has opened the season with five consecutive 20-point games, the first time that has happened in 20 years.
• The Flyers had 10 dunks as a team including Toppin recording his 100th career dunk.
• Dayton out-scored Virginia Tech in the paint 2:1. Dayton scored 48 points in the paint.
• The Flyers had 22 assists compared to the Hokies 13. 
• The Dayton starters combined to score 66 of Dayton's 89 points.
